    Went over word count!
I recently handed in my GCSE History B controlled assessment assignment.
My teacher told us not to take too much notice to the word count (2000) so I didn't. I word processed it, and it wasn't until after that I noticed how much I'd written.

It was by then too late.

I had slightly over 3000 words in the essay itself, and the guideline word count was 2000. Will these be a problem? Do you think I'll lose marks for this, and if so, how many? I feel it was of A/A* standard but I'm very worried about the number of words...

    Thanks

    How was is worded?

Was is "you are advised to write between x and 2000 words" or "your essay must be between x and 2000 words", or something else?

If it was just a guideline it might be ok, it depends what instructions you were given. At my uni they stop reading after the word count so they would have only marked the first 2000 words.

But if your teacher told you not to take much notice then it should be fine.

erm... if the word count is given by the exam board they would probably want you to stay within 10% of the suggested word limit .. so between 1800 and 2200 words, otherwise you may lose marks..

..if it's only being marked by your teacher then it probably won't matter since they usually give the limit cos they cant be bothered to read huugee essays

They might just mark the first 2000 or so words, since it wouldn't be fair to other candidates if you wrote an extra 800-1000 words than they did. Always stick to the 10% rule either way, unless told otherwise (sometimes it can be as little as 5% leeway or more if the teacher doesn't care).

    Once you go over 2000:

The rest of the words are cut off (in the eyes of an invigilator).

'2000 word limit' But my teacher brushed that off as if it didn't matter at all? That's the bit I'm concerned about...I'm sure he wont take off any marks, but when it gets sent to AQA ( do all papers get sent?) then I'll be worried.

Doesn't matter. Found this on the controlled assessment leaflet for GCSE AQA History B:

The total word limit for the two questions is about
2000 words. This is guidance, not prescription, and
there should be no penalty for exceeding or failing
to meet that word limit. The 2000 word guidance is
equivalent to current coursework and is felt to be
an appropriate amount of words to enable students
to develop their answers fully enough to reach the
    higher levels.
EDIT: I have done well over 2000 words.

When I did some English coursework, my teacher said it should be about 2000 words. I wrote 3000 and she said it could do with being longer. *shrug*

If it's coursework I doubt it'll get sent off in our school we do OCR but only the top, bottom, middle and a random one get sent off. They are used as a sample to see if the teacher marked them correctly.

My GCSE History coursework was meant to be 2,500 words. I submitted a 5,500 word essay but they only knocked 5% off so still got an A*!

I went over the same wordcount by over 2000 words and I still got an A, so as long as what you have written is to a good standard, it should be fine.

Hello, it is nothing to worry about because, even though I had wrote over 5000 words my teacher was surprised but not really concerned, which means that the guidlines were not very strict.
