Trinity College Dublin or Newcastle?
Hello, I was wondering if anyone would mind giving me their opinions re. TCD vs. Newcastle? I know that ultimately it's my decision, but at the moment generally I just want to go to whichever one that I have visited last!
TCD pros:
Dublin - loads of family there,
Ireland
Cheap!
In the centre of a great capital city
Newc. pros:
Great town,
opportunity to intercalate,
Cheap living expensive (but much more student debt - fees!)
Any comments would be really helpful, hopefully give me some different perspectives.
Thanks for reading! -
Re: Trinity College Dublin or Newcastle?
I know you mean cheaper fees, but the main reason why the northerners avoid southern universities (particulary Dublin) is due to the cost of living which often ends up balancing itself out against the northern fees. However as you are now paying 9k a year, it will be much cheaper yes. But you will be raped on day to day buys.
I thought that the NHS paid medical degrees though? -
Re: Trinity College Dublin or Newcastle?Only the last year - if you intercalate thats 45,000 in fees :s(Original post by bestofyou)

Re: Trinity College Dublin or Newcastle? From what I understand though SF don't fund you to go to Ireland? Unless you have an Irish passport how do plan on funding Dublin?(Original post by InkyOne)

Re: Trinity College Dublin or Newcastle? All EU citizens qualify for free tuition fee in the ROI. However, Universities charge a number of added on costs at the start of each year that you DO NOT get a loan for and therefore comes upfront, straight out your pocket. It can take costs up to 2500 euro a year before even thinking about accomodation/food/leisure.(Original post by InkyOne)

Re: Trinity College Dublin or Newcastle?Apologies - trying to get other people's thoughts on the matter, in case there's anything I didn't think of when making a decision. My bad.(Original post by Orinincandenza)
Major life decision about which university and country i should go to for the next 5/6 years.
Guess i'd better put it to an internet poll to find out, pro choice. -

Re: Trinity College Dublin or Newcastle?Currently Ireland, all my UK family are heading back for retirement, so my whole family will be there eventually, but it wouldn't be too hard to go once graduating in the UK i think...(Original post by gozatron)

Re: Trinity College Dublin or Newcastle?
Well when it comes down to it, it's all about how you can fund staying in Dublin. You cannot get a job with a course like medicine and you won't be elegible for the grant until your third year. Obviously you won't have huge tuition fees to pay back, but even so. It would be awesome if some of your family lived close enough for you to commute (I commuted 40 minutes every day, no problem....so so many commute as so many live within the catchment areas of the dublin universities) and would be willing to take you in. Your final year placement you do get paid for, I'm not sure how much.
Reputation-wise, Trinity has slid slightly as it is just not as well funded as the others it competes with. So it's just outside the top 50 in the world now. It is an amazing university, top quality lecturers- it attracts the best as it's the best in Ireland by a substantial amount. As you said, right in the centre of the city. But it manages to have a good collegiate atmosphere. Beautiful buildings, great libraries, and also has some buildings dedicated to medical and scientific research on campus that are always in the news. It's one of the most established courses.
You should also research the teaching hospitals involved, and the HSE- very different to the NHS and in a much worse state, unfortunately. Trinity's main teaching hospital is St. James. It's walkable from campus, several bus routes also. -
