I was made to sing and perform in an interview for a shop job...wtf??
I had an interview this week at a shoe shop, and the interview consisted of a 5 min presentation about ourselves & had to include things like our fave ice cream flavour etc...god knows why.
Anyway we then had to get into groups and write a song about the products then sing it/dance it to the rest of the group. What is going on with the world? Why have interviews gotten so "David Brent"ish over the past few years??? Not a single question about customer service etc, I just don't understand it. -
Re: I was made to sing and perform in an interview for a shop job...wtf??I'm friendly, but i'm not a performing monkey. Screw that.(Original post by Bellissima)
to show you are outgoing and positive... if you showed the same attitude while doing this interview as you do in this question, that isn't good..
just go along with it, they have your CV now they want to know YOU. -
Re: I was made to sing and perform in an interview for a shop job...wtf??
I have no respect for that type of employer/interviewer. I got interviewed for a kitchen assistant job and got told at the end I was going to get a call regardless of outcome. The tosser couldn't ever be bothered (at least not tell me then?!).
In my experience of interviews and job applications, they are looking for personality-void, aspiration-lacking robots. Sorry but I am everything but. The moment they sense I want to do something else with my life other than serving nuggets to people, and I know the difference between "its" and "it's", they bin my CV like a banana skin.
Self-employment is the way. -

Re: I was made to sing and perform in an interview for a shop job...wtf??
I can understand something similar for a shop which has a 'philosophy' all around having extremely charismatic employees who make it almost a show in a way, with demonstrations (I'm thinking of shops like Lush.)
But for a shoe shop? Wow. -
Re: I was made to sing and perform in an interview for a shop job...wtf??Contrary to what a poster above said (edit - not directly above), it has nothing to do with wanting to know if you're friendly and outgoing. It is as you say, they want to know if you'll jump when they say so, even if it makes you look silly. If you don't realise the task is embarassing, even better for them.(Original post by tinman1)
I'm friendly, but i'm not a performing monkey. Screw that.
I could understand it if it was relevant to the job, but it isn't. At the very least, customer service roleplays would have been far more efficient in determining your suitability (though I question the value of these too). It's funny that employers are always whining in news about the standard of young people. They wonder why no one wants their jobs when they're treated like, as you put so well, performing monkeys.
Well done you I say. I hope you find an employer that actually wants to know what you can do rather than using you for their entertainment. -
Re: I was made to sing and perform in an interview for a shop job...wtf??I got offered a job in a supermarket so that'll do me. Considering complaining to their head office though, it was degrading. I didn't realise I needed to be able to sing and dance to be able to find a shoe box.(Original post by Moggs)

Re: I was made to sing and perform in an interview for a shop job...wtf??Exactly. What does the a silly little performance tell them of your customer service or shoe selling skills? Presentations and small team building exercises are fine, but that is just daft. I would have asked them what they were hoping to assess from such an activity and kindly reminded them of the job they were actually advertising for before leaving.(Original post by tinman1)

Re: I was made to sing and perform in an interview for a shop job...wtf??
They want to know if you'll commit and join in and really be a team player. You're not part of a bland, colourless, degrading corporate machine, with a pathetic man in his late thirties as a stand-in Dear Leader who makes neat little tallies for every minute you're late to work by, or how often you use the toilet, or how much you smile. You're part of a team.

EDIT: Alright, can someone please explain the negs...?Last edited by najinaji; 19-04-2012 at 21:41. -

If I was asked to sing and dance in an interview for a sales assistant job, I be like WTF
as well. I swear these days you can't get a job without being the absolute life of the party and having the personality of a super-outgoing-happy-dandelion.
