£200 is plenty, my girlfriend gets £40 a week from her parents and she does fine.
:s-smilie: I thought 200 quid was quite low. I'd struggle on that. I spend about 80 quid a week...

£80 is, to be honest, a lot to spend a week every week, and far more than most people have to spend!

Surviving on a lot less than that isn't difficult if you know you can/can't afford, and are realistic with your money.
When will people realise that expensive nights out are a luxury and not a necessity?

Very true, but it's not exactly 'fun' just sitting in your living space and browsing the net constantly...

I think traveling and spending the night at another city is something nice to do as well... obviously you're not going to be doing that on £200 a month.

Some people really show me how things on a lower budget are possible.

But it is possible to have fun on very little money. Think about all the people you know at uni. Almost all of them will have some DVDs/TV boxsets. A night in with a film some beers etc and a few friends can cost less than a fiver and is a fun way to relax and get to know people better (you hardly get to chat to people in a club). Yes, it is perfectly fine to want to go out in the evening. But four times a week (like many people on here are saying) isn't a requirement. And in Brighton (which is quite an expensive city) there are student club nights with £1 entry and £1 or £2 drinks.

Yes, there are lots of things that would be 'nice' to do. But you have to live within your means. Whether your budget is £20 a week or £200+ a week.

I always find I have to make these one off purchases every week which boost it up from 40 to 50 quid (which I spend on the necessities) to around 80. Textbooks, haircut, printer ink, a router etc.

There always seems to be something every week so even though I try I can't really cut down unless I don't socialise at all. A trip to the pub will cost me 10 quid, a meal on weekends (as I'm not catered on weekends) will be 5 pounds if I get something cheap.

Any suggestions?

I suppose I do spend a lot on football though as I follow my club home and away . But even without the football spend I just can't get it down .
