Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...With multiplayer in mind, is this a viable option? I don't know how old it is or how strong the community is if I'm honest.(Original post by Just Josh)
Absolutely horrified that no-one here has suggested the greatest RTS game probably of all time:
Cheers for posting though. -

Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...Sure, the multiplayer is dead. but honestly, it's worth it for the single or to play it with your mates over LAN or online. And you could probably pick them both up for less than a fiver each.(Original post by Converse Rocker)

The homeworld series is one of the most genre defining series. But it just never sold that well. Fingers crossed one day for a Homeworld 3

Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...I find those sorts of dicsussions normally quite arcane and not really of much value to someone starting out. What I'd do if you're playing SC2 is watch some good casters and tutors such as day[9] and Force (I'm sure more posters will suggest others) to work out some strategies and just get a general feel for how things are played on SC2. There's a great MLG final match cast by DJ Wheat and day[9] that you could watch for a sense of competitiveness and community.(Original post by Converse Rocker)
Possibly, I'm downloading the Starcraft 2 starter edition at the moment though. The game looks great, different to what I've played before, but their forums are worryingly full of complaints about balance and the like.
One of my mates keeps pestering me to get AoE 3; my only experience with the series was Age of Mythology, which was pretty fun. Might give the series a better chance, cheers for posting
Also I apologise for not posting here for ages.
Besides RTS, I like grand strategy and I think it's a great way of playing strategy without having to get too involved or flustered. Crusader Kings II is a great example of this and has you starting out as a noble from 1066 and playing through 400 years as that character and their dynasty. The aim is entirely up to you but you can try the demo to see what you think.
Happy gaming.Last edited by ANARCHY__; 22-05-2012 at 09:21. -
Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...Starter Edition - yeah I downloaded it to see what the game was like(Original post by exe)
ther'es some kind of starcraft basic thing that lets you play SC2 online but only as terran. give it a stab

Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...SUPREME COMMANDER!! Forged Alliance is best entry point. Don't bother with SupCom2. Starcraft is decent though.(Original post by Converse Rocker)
Hey RTS fans of tsr, suggest me a game? -

Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...Gaming(Original post by Converse Rocker)
My laptop could only run it smoothly when everything was turned down to lowest, and unit scale on small
I might buy a beastly gaming laptop some time in the future though, in which case, definitely

Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...but they sure are expensive good luck and find something cheap but can run most games you dont need a destroyer also if that dont work out just play the less graphicaly demanding games like warcraft and possibly half life 2 (not rts)(Original post by Converse Rocker)
I know it's generally frowned upon by PC fans, but not everyone has the space for a full PC. That's just life. -
Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...I don't mind dropping down a few settings, do it all the time on this laptop anyway.(Original post by steelface)

And it's not for maxing out BF3 or anything, it would just be for Total War really, but it all depends what the next TW title is anyway, and how much money I could scrape together. Just an idea, and the only real alternative when you don't have space for a full PC. -
Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...
Something I feel I should add about TW: Shogun 2 and multiplayer. Most people playing online have upgraded to the stand-alone xpac Fall of the Samurai, and for some reason the game allows people who are using the original games units to fight against people using the xpacs units. In practice this means that unless you are a pretty amazing tactician that you'll probably lose every fight since you have to relay on bows and swords while the other guy has cannons muskets and Gatling guns.

Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...Yeah, I've watched a lot of gameplay (mainly from Heir of Carthage) about non-FotS vs FotS armies. Over on the official forums, a lot of people feel it should be balanced, but it may have been CA's intention that FoTs armies were more powerful (in line with history)(Original post by Carecup)

I believe if you turn off something to do with avatars, you can choose to play people that aren't using FotS armies only, so it's not all that bad
Just a small comment on your point about bows, you have to be clever with your micro and position your bows behind hills, allowing them to fire on the enemy without a clear line of sight (which rifle units require). Generally though it's a pretty tough fight.Last edited by Converse Rocker; 23-05-2012 at 21:47. -
Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...That's a nice theory however most of the time it won't work in practice. Thanks to the relative rareness of accessible hills in the skirmish maps plus the fact that your sword units can't hold the rifles from getting over the hill and into line of sight of your archers means usually you will lose.(Original post by Converse Rocker)

Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...Sorry mate, reading this back, it sounded really arsey. I didn't mean it like that though.(Original post by Converse Rocker)

My main problem is the graphics card; my current laptop is actually not bad when it comes to power, but the graphics card simply wasn't put there with games in mind. It copes fine with stuff like Starcraft which isn't too demanding, but not the latest TW games.
This is why a more powerful laptop wouldn't necessarily solve the problem. Thanks for posting
Depends what the next TW game is. If it's something I'll play, I might save up. If not I'll probably just leave it.(Original post by steelface)

I know what you mean, a decent opponent will definitely give you a tough fight. I'm kind of hoping the next TW won't involve guns, but if it's something along the lines of 'guns are just coming into play' like Shogun 2 is, I wouldn't mind it really.(Original post by Carecup)

I can't imagine a TW game without any archers or extensive melee and cav really

Re: RTS fans, suggest me a game...Like I said earlier, my laptop will never handle Shogun 2. Napoleon is a little older but my laptop will still fail on me unfortunately, just wasn't built with Total War in mind

Luckily I can play what is arguably one of/if not the best game in the series without any trouble - Rome.
