    Feeling like a failure when I get a grade B or lower
    I'm currently doing my GCSEs and I have this problem related to the grades I get in modular exams and coursework. The thing is, I've stopped tolerating grades less than an A quite a while ago and everytime I get a B or lower I just don't feel happy. Is there something wrong with me? Am I too ambitious/too demanding?

    P.S
    What are all these neggs for?

    No it's quite common, I was the same last year at GCSE and I've only got worse wanting more and more, at times I am disappointing with AS level A grades if the UMS is borderline!

    It's in our personalities I guess we just have to at times step back and say "what do I want?" but "if I don't get what I want, what is good ENOUGH?", this helps, just think what is the worst case scenario? It's not normally that bad

    Well you'll certainly have fun if/when you go to university.

    I wouldn't say there's anything wrong. If you think that your targets should be A's then of course you'll be disappointed when you don't achieve that. While it's good to have ambitious targets to push you to do your best, it's possible you're setting your expectations too high if you find it hard tolerating less than an A. We can't all get high grades all of the time.

    No , not at all. I'm like you in that matter,if I get B's I feel so upset. It's just what we think is good or not,

    If you have the ability to achieve A's then you should be satisfied with nothing less. I hate people who say people who get B's and are unhappy are ungrateful. It's all about fulfilling your potential. It seems as if you have the potential to get A's from what you said. Just keep at it, let the B's motivate you. I got a mix of A's A*'s and B's at GCSE but now I'm getting straight A's at a level, just about to finish my last year. If you are really interested in your subjects you can boost your grades at college

    I'm doing A2 level now, and I feel an overwhelming disappointment when I get a B which is ridiculous because I don't think I can do much better either!
    But at GCSE as long as you pass it doesn't really matter, its year 12 when you get to worry over grades properly! :P

    For me it goes:

    A* = Ecstatic
    A = Pleased
    B = Indifferent

    and for a C...

    Don't worry too much, it's only GCSE, even Cs will allow you onto an A-level course. However at a-level (depending on what uni you want to go to) then you can start worrying seeing as they can actually affect your future.
    Top university courses require a Bs minimum in Maths / English. :fyi:

    Your advice: :bricks:

    I'm doing mine too and feel exactly the same.

    Do people in your school generally do really well? In mine they do and I think that's what contributes to the disappointment of getting a B. I think the main thing is to remember that other people try really hard for a B or a C, so it's really not very bad at all.

    I find that being unhappy about getting a B is great motivation to try harder, work harder and revise harder for next time though.

    I am the same, being an A-level student. It's good you have high expectations of yourself because it means you won't get cocky or complacent. It also means you'll work hard and pay special attention to the aspects you get wrong. Have high expectations but don't let your grades affect you to an extent where you can't work.

    I sometimes have this problem, but at the end of the day - I ask myself could I have done better?

    For example, In Year 7, I got a Level 4 for every German assessment I did, but my end of year level was a Level 3, I'm still angry two years on, in this case I actually did do better and have the levels to prove it.

    Earlier this year, we had a History project, in the last three projects I had two level 6's and a Level 7, so for this project, I was aiming for a Level 7/8.i worked really hard at it, but only got a Level 5, I was very dissapointed, but at the end of the day, I tried my hardest and I couldn't have done better.

    As someone else said, you need a B to do University Courses.

    In fact a tmy school to do Biology, Chemistry or Physics at A-Level, you need a minumum of a B in Maths, English and Two Sciences. Although, In Pshycology you only need a C in Maths, English and One Science. To do Further Maths at A-Level, you need a minumum of an A.

    It's a worse feeling when you're doing A-levels, as your future depends upon good grades.

    Honestly, the thought of it seems bad if you're aiming for As/A*s, however when it happens, you just need to see where you did badly, set targets and practice.

    Knowing the subject content will get you a B maximum, whereas practicing and improving will move you closer towards the higher grades.

    That aside, a B isn't a bad mark, it's just where you need higher grades for university placements and reaching and exceeding your potential, you can feel disheartened by a B. Everyone is different.

    No problem setting high standards, but you shouldn't be hard on yourself for a B, it's still a good grade.
