What is the greatest sci-fi film of all time?

Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

    For me definitely Aliens.
Shocking lack of some of the best sci-fi films

    ALIEN not aliens
    The Thing (john carpenter)
    Empire strikes back
    28 days later
    The Terminator
    Mad Max
    Back to the Future

Bit cheesy but i loved Predator too

Although I voted for Aliens, there is some body of evidence that it's actually a war film rather than a scifi film - and James Cameron seemed to think it was more specifically a Vietnam War film.

I would have gone with Bladerunner for being the sine qua non of Cyberpunk; but it lost out for me due to the differing cuts and endings.

I'm not going to vote because I haven't seen all the films, but surely Metropolis deserves to be on a 'sci-fi greatest' list?

Terminator 2. Just.. Awesome. My 13 year old self was blown away when I spent time watching the Terminator films, I just really wanted to get into that one and I did, never looked back, my favourite film!

In terms of scope and demonstrating what the genre's capable of, 2001 is pretty much the king. Gets a lot of criticism for flat characters and slow pacing though (even though both are intentional). Considering story and character, you'd have to go for Blade Runner. For pure entertainment/the childish wonder that big, blockbuster, event cinema is supposed to evoke, it's unquestionably Star Wars.

Those films present no competition to such an epic film as Star Wars.

Terminator 2 is my personal favourite. In fairness, I'm gonna have to go with Star Wars.

I agree, for me T2 was just something exceptional. It is actually my favourite film ever, even after more than 20 years.

that's the greatest science fiction film ever made.

    I watched this last week:

and it was ace. and if you believe Aliens to be a better film than Alien then you should probably be loaded into a cannon and fired into the sun.

Back To The Future, Empire Strikes Back, Alien, Aliens, Terminator 2, too many to choose.

Another one of my all time favourites is Gattaca. Awesome movie.

Agreed. I saw Metropolis at a student cinema a year or two ago and it was something of an experience.

From that list I went for The Matrix, though 2001 and Star Wars are also good. For modern sci-fi I liked Minority Report.

Much as I love Back to the Future, its got to be the original Star Wars trilogy...

So so psyched for Prometheus by the way, seemed like an appropriate place to say that...
