Getting a job with a disability.
Sorry for another thread tonight, just got a lot on my mind!

Has anyone had any experience with getting a job with mental health difficulties? I'm dreading to when it comes to applying for places because I don't think anywhere will want to take me on as they would have to make provisions for me and be quite flexible. Anyone got any experiences of how it works, or can tell someone they knows story?

lol why is there a question mark? do you have troubles functioning on a day to day basis? I'm curious about PTSD, how did this occur?

Because I was questioning why you were questioning me. Yes I do. I don't really want to talk about how I got it.

Understandable - the reason I asked because there are many different kinds of mental health problems. I don't see any problem though, go ahead and apply.

Are you required to disclose this before you join?

What alterations would they realistically need to make?

What would I be expected to do, if I was working and something triggered my PTSD or set off my anxiety disorder and I couldn't continue working . I would need to have the rest of the day off. Or if I were to have another episode I would need to have whatever time off until I recovered. So they would need to know and be able to be flexible with me.

OK, but do you need to disclose this before joining? Or can you get the job, then tell them about it? I'm not sure what the legal situation is.

If you don't have to tell them during your application, then don't? That way it doesn't hurt your chances. If you do have to tell them then unfortunately I imagine it will make things difficult.

You need to look up the Disability Discrimination Act and see if your situation qualifies you as disabled. If so, then the law protects you to a large extent.

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Disabled...hts/DG_4001068

You are under no obligation to tell an employer about health issues ever/at all. And the general guidance, although it isn't appropriate in all cases, is not to mention anything during the selection process. Once you have a job offer from an employer, then you disclose your health issues if you need them to make workplace adjustments, which it seems you will need.

You help if you are honest with yourself about what you could reasonably do, and only apply for jobs which have the capacity to support your disability, which means when you get an offer, and employer will be able to make reasonable adjustments.

logically there shouldnt be any issues, anti discrimination and all that. however that being said in this job market i dont believe it would exactly be a shining beacon on your CV.. it depends if itll affect your ability to work or not i guess if youll be liable to take a lot of sick days or have any 'issues' around the work place. unforutnatly employers can afford to be very choosey now but either way cant hurt to try i could be completely wrong so good luck!

The point of me asking this question is because I would rather look for ways in which I can work sustainably without having problems in a way which will help me be able to work. I don't want to be looking to get benefits and doing **** all until I get better, which I don't know how long that could take. But as some of you have said, its finding someone who would be willing to do so..
