Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?
In my Birmingham interview for Childrens nusing the situation they gave me was a child with tonsilitis, and I said something about telling the parents how to look after the child, like by giving him ice cream

Then they asked something about who teaches you on a nursing course, "Ummmm The lecturers?"
Got an offer though and its my insurance
Now my QUB interview was a disaster, the whole thing.

Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?
Sheffield Interview: Mind went blank after being asked for the mechanism for the formation of a hydroxynitrile from a ketone and CN- ions. Cue me going 'I know this, I do actually know this, I promise you I know this, or atleast I should do with the amount of time I spent revising this for my exam in January I should.'
York: Gets asked about either an amine or an amide. Can't remember which. Looks completely blank at her. Eventually realises I havent understood, she draws it out for me. Also was so nervous I couldnt pick up the pen to draw something.
I have no idea how I got offers to be quite honest. -
Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?
I was asked about what I'd learned from a book outside the syllabus I'd read, to which I replied 'the different positions which groups may attach around a carbon ring, meta, ortho and para.' When it came to saying which was which however, I had no idea - managed to guess correctly and when he nodded I shouted 'YES!' a little loudly. When he asked why certain groups join at certain positions, I spent about a minute staring at him before shrugging, and saying 'I've got nothing.'
In another one I forgot to sign in, so was left abandoned in the waiting room and had to ask when I'd be having my interview. Embarrassing when they apologised, saying they must have made an error at the sign-in desk and I just stared like 'what sign-in desk?' -
Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?
In my Oxford interview I was presented with a rock and asked to describe its features. I have no knowledge of geology, a rock is a just a rock to me, so I decided to go with "it looks rainbowy". RAINBOWY. It's not even a word!
Although I answered their next question on photosynthesis fine, I was rejected, unsurprisingly. -

Oxford: 'So, tell us what you thought about this book you read...'
Me (mind blank): 'errr...what book?!'
(English interview)
Me: I've never read a novel before.
Interviewer: [looks quizzical]
Oops.

Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?
There was a small hole in the floor during my Cambridge interview, into which my chair leg sank straight into the moment I sat down, launching my nicely across the floor, my confidence reached an all time low and I failed to get in as well as feeling fully stupid. Wasn't even my fault that they'd left a plug socket trapdoor thing completely open.
Alas life goes on. -
Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?Any idea who did your Manc interview? Just out of curiosity really since I went there(Original post by justn1c2)
At my Manchester interview i got Photons and protons mixed up when talking about Spectroscopy. Not really funny but i felt like an idiot.
Also he got out this ridiculously difficult maths book out and start flipping to pages talking about it, asking if i knew what he was talking about, and i just nodded along agreeing but in my head i was like "I have no F***ing idea what this is!"
Got an offer, but didnt take it.

I cried when I got told face to face from the interviewers that I had a place to do nursing at middlesex.
All my mascara ran and I was like you wont regret this i promise
Then I felt so embarrassed as they said well this doesn't normally happen :s oooops

Royal Holloway interview (Geology)
After i successfully managed to stop the interviewer asking questions by chatting animatedly about my love for the great outdoors he finally managed to sneak in the one geology related question of the day
Interviewer : Soo, how are minerals found in all those places you mentions
Me : (caught completely flatfooted )Well ..... i dont quite know the answer thats why i'm applying to uni to find out
strangely enough he seemed to find my slight cheek funny and confirmed i got an offer

Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?
I had to come over from the US for my interview at Middlesex for my Master's in Social Work... I came over a couple days early and ended up waking up the morning of my interview with a ridiculously swollen, red eye that I never did manage to get down. Just had to pretend it wasn't there through my whole interview.

Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?
When I'm stressed I make bad jokes. For instance, at UCL:
"Looking back at your BMAT essay, what would you change?"
"My handwriting."
and...
"Is there anything that particularly interests you?"
"I've been warned not to mention stem cell therapy. Now I have."
Also, I was the first of the group to go in and being called took me by surprise (the waiting room was all joking about and I had forgotten where I was). I struggled to get my jacket on in the corridor then when I got into the room forgot all etiquette and took a seat without being asked, whilst one interviewer held his hand out for a handshake then, left unnoticed, retracted it disapprovingly. I saw the look on his face, sprung to my feet and grabbed his retreating hand a bit over-zealously.
Somehow, got in. -

Not embarrassing but it was amusing. Interview was with Westminster University for contemporary media practice.
First split into different groups of about 6. We had to watch each others films and critic them. So I start talking about contrast and different types of media like mock-a-mentry etc. So after every film the interviewer kept staring at me for my critic first :| lol comes to my film, everyone lives it but the interviewer says he found it boring :O haha! Afterwards we're told to have a one hour break then he'll see people one after the other. So everyone else jumps at the chance of people first, second etc on the list... And I end up last. So I jump on a train and go window shopping in central London for 3 hours lol
Ok so now it's time for my one 2 one interview and he starts asking me why did I allow myself to be last on the list, because he didn't wanna wait this long to speak to me. I said I enjoyed my window shopping
lol
So he starts asking me questions like "how would I rank my work in comparison to the other films I saw today" so I just started talking about how I would have improved their work, their style etc... He said "do you ever give a straight answer?" I just laughed... Anyways at the end he says I may find the course boring as I'll be surrounded by young people (I'll be 28 when I start), that I may find the course slow (as he feels I'm at a year 2 level), that Westminster uni can defiantly offer me something, but isn't sure what yet... But he wants me on the course haha.
I firmed them haha.

Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview? At my interview, they gave me a laminated sheet with the question on. At the end of that station (it was MMI), I got up to leave and move to the next station, the interviewer put her hand out and I thought she wanted to shake my hand so I did, and she goes 'actually I need my sheet back..'(Original post by blacklistmember)
Any embarrassing moments from this year?
Slightly awkward! -
Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?
I know someone who tried to leave the interview room through the store cupboard door instead of the actual door (earning weird looks).
My friend left the interview and was so dazed going down the spiral stairs that she didn't stop going down and ended up in the cellar. -
Re: Most embarrassing moment in a university interview?
Interviewer: Sooo, which is the longest book you've ever read in German?
Me (mind empty): Uuhm, uuuhm, Harry Potter? (blushing)
(blank face from both interviewers, then one of them tried saving me)
ow many of the books?
(me, regaining confidence) The first three volumes...
Interviewer: That's thick, kinda like Mann's "Magic Mountain"
Waiting for the rejection now.

Now my QUB interview was a disaster, the whole thing.
I guess it's mainly lecturers, nurses you're with during placement and you own independent study.

ow many of the books?
