Re: What did you get in GCSE History and AS/A level History?
I haven't actually taken it at A-level because it clashed with chemistry. However your ability to do it at AS depends on your problem at GCSE. If it was mainly remembering things then it comes to harder work and you SHOULD be able to overcome it. If it is writing in a particular way then it is much harder to overcome as it is a harder skill to gain. As for my GCSE result i got an A overall:
a low C in the controlled Assessment (we were the first year to do them and i had to chop mine in half because of a word limit)
Full marks on the knowledge based paper
a high A in the sources based paper.
My problem was mainly memory at GCSE and i overcame by reading text textbook so many times I'd almost committed it to memory. I did a lot of questions then to have an understanding of what they wanted from me. If you find memory was your problem I'm, sure you could do the same thing at AS and A2. -
Re: What did you get in GCSE History and AS/A level History?
I didn't do History at GCSE, got a B at AS overall, then rather unexpectedly came out with an A* at at A Level, even though I was only predicted a C.
I now study History at uni and have had 1sts all the way through so far, minus my first ever essay. I don't see my grades as talent, but rather my handwork and passion for the subject. If you have that, you should be able to do well regardless.
Good Luck

Why don't you go back and do an access course when youre ready and get to uni that way?(Original post by theonefrombrum)
I got a B in GCSE history and an A in AS level History. I left the college then for personal reasons and so i'll never know what A level i might have got.

Re: What did you get in GCSE History and AS/A level History?
Just got an A* at GCSE (like 273/300 UMS or somethin') and hopefully, with luck, I'll get an A at AS history, as I got a B (76%) in January, so I need 84% to get an A overall. I'll be so glad if I do get an A, though. But a B would still be pretty good, which is guaranteed, as I only have to get 64% on the may paper to get 70% (B) overall

Re: What did you get in GCSE History and AS/A level History?
In GCSE I only got a high B because I hated what we were learning - I really don't enjoy modern history. But in AS level because I loved the stuff we were learning - the Crusades - I put in a lot of effort during the term and got a high A. Hopefully I've gotten another A with the English Civil War paper and I'll be so happy.
I think whether you enjoy the subject plays an important factor i the grade as you're likely to remember the stuff you enjoyed learning about, maybe you just don't enjoy the course you're doing now but that doesn't mean you won't join what ever course you do at A level where you could possibly get high marks. It is a big step up as well so be prepared for that as well. -
Re: What did you get in GCSE History and AS/A level History?
Hello All
Like many of you I was at school yesterday collecting my AS results
and achieved
A in History
A in Economics
B in maths ( 1 raw mark from an A)
and a B in physics which I am dropping.
I would retake the Maths in Jan but this would be way paste application dates
this is with
GCSE's of A* stars in Maths, History and Science
and A's in Science, Geography and Business studies
as well as five Bs in English/Lit, German and so on
I would very much like to read History at Oxford next year and
am aware how extremely competitive, obviously I would be happy reading it at the others. I realise my grades arent great to apply to oxford but think I can offer a good personal statement and could show a good interest in the interview, so I would like to take my chances or am I being far too unrealistic, and would applying be a waste of one of my choices? -
It'd be a struggle of an application. Many colleges at Oxford require an A at GCSE English and Maths before they'll even look at your application... And Oxford in general have a reputation for putting too much emphasis on GCSE performance; whereas Cambridge concentrates on UMS score. I wouldn't say it's impossible though. What's your UMS for history like?(Original post by JackN4)

Re: What did you get in GCSE History and AS/A level History?
I agree that Oxford like to scrutinise GCSE performance, most likely as some kind of filter. My GCSE's were just above average but not Oxford standard. Yet I achieved AAAA at AS, was predicted AAA at A-Level, and ultimately achieved A*A*B.
I didn't even get an interview, so be aware it is highly competitive. -
Re: What did you get in GCSE History and AS/A level History?
Got an A* at GCSE, A at AS and A at A2.
Tbh, I would take a look at the sllyabus but History is quite a hard subject - the coursework I had to do for A2 was one of the hardest pieces of work I've ever had to complete, and very stressful. So have a look..
