Very short hair cut?
So, I am constantly irritated by my hair, just its general being there, touching my face etc. I had quite long hair for a while but recently had it cut to about shoulder length. Now, I want a really short haircut, as in a crop, or maybe even a longer shave. However, I worry that it will cause people to pass judgement on me, i.e. lesbian, butch etc. (I have nothing against homosexuals by the way, I just don't wish to be misjudged). I am sort of dark blonde, quite tall, thin, but with a roundish face. Does anyone have any advice or experience of very short hair? Thanks

Re: Very short hair cut?
BTW, forgot to say last time I posted, but I had MEGA short hair when I was around 14. I went through this weird phase because I thought it looked 'edgy' and 'cool'. It was about an inch long, and I used to tousle it up every morning with some product.
But the first time I went to school after having it cut, I got absolutely penalized...I got pretty much every insult you can imagine, people kept telling me that I looked like a lesbian and everything...
But there was nothing wrong with the cut itself, it was more my face shape, and the fact that it wasn't suited to me. When I was 14, my face was a little rounder and my cheekbones weren't as defined, so I guess you could say I looked a little boyish.
I ended up hating my haircut, and decided to grow it out, and I have to tell you, it was the worst time ever. Once it grew out, it was neither here nor there, if you get me. I couldn't put it in a ponytail or bunches or anything, and I just had to leave it until it got past that awkward stage. This is the most painful stage to go through...and you've constantly got the problem of split ends because you simply have to leave it to do it's own thing. Cut it, and you're back to square one again.
I guess the choice is yours. Like I said earlier, if you dress alternative and you have strong facial features go for it. Equally, if you have a structured or feminine face, go for it. Just bear in mind to get the right style when you do, otherwise you'll have to let it grow out...and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Re: Very short hair cut?
I've had short hair since I was 12 (I'm nearly 20 now) varying between a buzz cut and chin length and everything in between, in pretty much every colour. Yes, people do assume you're a lesbian, but that died out once I had left school and people grow up a bit. It's your hair, so it should be what you want. It shouldn't matter to you even if people do think you look butch (which isn't the case with many short style anyway).
There are plenty of people who like short hair and I do occasionally get the odd compliment on it.
I quite like this site to look for different styles & eras.
Also, don't assume you have to take on a different style completely just to complement your hairstyle. A simple short style can go with pretty much anything, and is so much easier to maintain.
I used to take this picture to the hairdressers when I actually went (I just cut my own hair now). Pretty much just a standard crop which looks alright if you're growing it out too.
Feel free to ask me anything too... -
Re: Very short hair cut?
just do it, if you dont like it you can grow it out and lesson learned
I had short hair a few years ago and i hated but but i learned to style it differently and also learned what does and doesnt suit me.
So what if people call you a lesbian (they did it to me) you can just say "im not gay no" sorted.
my biggest problem is that i have short purple spikey hair on my passport but now its light brown and halfway down my back :PLast edited by Care-Free; 23-04-2012 at 13:51. -
Re: Very short hair cut?Hi, I literally just got my hair cut uber short on Thursday because like you, my hair just irritated me! I had a bob and it still felt too long. Was the best thing I've done with my hair! Love it! My name's Serena Terparia if you want to have a look! I'm changing my TSR pic soon so you can have a look at what it's like.(Original post by Ursin)

My advice is, if you want to go for it, go for it! Hair grows back if you don't like it and you can keep on cutting it if you do!
PS I don't look like a lesbian or butch. Most people have said I look like a pixie! lol hope this helps!

Re: Very short hair cut?
I got my hair cut really short twice- both times I went to two different hair-dressers, and both times they cut took way too much of the length off! Sad thing was, it was a blunt cut that hit just above my jaw. No bangs or anything! I swear I was embarrassed to even look in the mirror. So yeah, what ever you do, please don't get a blunt cut unless you're absolutely sure you can pull it off!
My advice, and this depends entirely on your face shape, would be to go in for a slightly longer asymmetrical bob with razor-sharp edges, like Victoria Beckham has on here: http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/imag...am_300X400.jpg
If it's still all over your face, you can just pin the front away, and I'm guessing it won't tingle the back of your neck either! (Personally, I'd get that if I could pull it off.)
Good luck!

Re: Very short hair cut?I love that picture! I would really like that hairstyle. I was thinking kind of along these lines http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en...44&tx=20&ty=64 or maybe a tiny bit shorter. But maybe that's just me wanting to look like Audrey Tautou, ha.(Original post by ehc)

Also, don't be worried about people saying you have to have delicate features or a sweet little face to pull off short hair (not saying you don't or anything, obv. I havent seen what you look like). I have a massive fivehead, big, chubby cheeks and super-thin hair but somehow short hair just seems to suit me better. It is quite versatile. But then again, I would be biased
Edit: Oh yeah, and the girl in the picture is Jean Seberg, taken from the film Breathless/a bout de souffle.Last edited by ehc; 23-04-2012 at 16:18. -
Re: Very short hair cut?
I had my hair cut from shoulder-length to very short when I was about 14. Kept it short for about 2 years. Most people said it looked good, it definitely looked better as I got older and my face got slimmer. I also got the "you look like a lesbian" comments you have to expect from certain lovely individuals (mainly chavvy year 7s in my case) when you get a haircut like that. I've grown it out into a long-ish bob now and am considering growing it longer. I wouldn't get it cut like that again now as it actually turned out to be more difficult to maintain than longer hair and I like how my hair looks now, but I don't regret doing it as my hair's actually grown back nicer than it was before and I really liked it at the time. If you want to do it, you might as well try it, if it doesn't look good then it'll grow back! Be sure before you go through with it though

Re: Very short hair cut?
I'm thinking of doing the same thing because long hair tends to make short girls look even younger than they are (I'm 5 foot 1 and constantly get mistaken for a 14 year old) and my hair is just boring at the moment anyway. I'm hoping to get something like Evan Rachel Woods and I have very feminine features so it should look alright in the end
Everyone I've spoken to about it has said "just go for it!" and you might as well, it's only a hair cut after all!

Re: Very short hair cut?
I had my haircut into a longish pixie-cut last summer - my shoulder length hair was getting really annoying. It's so much better: easier to style, dries really quickly (I have fine darkish blond hair that literally does nothing and a pixie-cut gives it shape). I would recommend getting a longer pixie-cut if you're unsure i.e. with a long side-fringe. I have a round face and looked a lot younger with long hair, now I actually look my age
I am now planning to get a shorter pixie-cut.
(One word of warning: pixie cuts lose their shape relatively quickly so you may need to invest in some kirby grips
)
