Chris Shorey Plymouth University
Hi,
I've actually taken the time and effort to create this thread in the hope that someone else doesn't make the mistake i did.
DO NOT USE CHRIS SHOREY!
I'd heard many horror stories about Chris shorey in Plymouth but thought that I'd be ok. I am a second year and I have been ill for over 4 mouths as I have had mould in my room for the entire term. No matter how much I contact them, the only time any action is taken is when my parents call up. There are so many other faults with our house that just havnt been sorted, it is unacceptable. and when we arrived in september our house was filthy, even though they insisted it had been cleaned. I even found a razor blade on my floor. And it only occured to them to inform us of a tramp who had broken into our boiler room and lived in there for weeks after we had moved in.
In summary, Chris Shorey don't care about the tennants, they just want your money. Do not use them! I recomend Clever Students in Plymouth, who have clean, new houses with cheaper rent and NO booking fees! -
Re: Chris Shorey Plymouth University
I'm a mature student at Plymouth University, starting the 2nd year in September. Though I have thankfully not had the pleasure of living in a Chris Shorey house myself as I live in Plymouth with family; I have several friends that have experienced the very same problems you have.
I've had alot of experience with renting and housing in the past however.
The above advice is spot on.
Private landlord or university managed housing is your best bet. Unless you've had good reviews or testimonials from past tenents of specific letting agencies then avoid them at all costs. They are nothing but trouble. Chris Shorey for example charge unreasonable fees for minor things which frankly should be illegal. They also employ a ticketing system to manage queues when students have complaints or issues that must be sorted. From what I have seen over the last few years their manner is extremely patronising and impersonal.
Become very familiar with tenent law. There are many resources out there such as government websites for example which will clarify simply what your rights are. Also they will make it clear what a landlord is allowed and not allowed to do; Same applies to letting agencies because they are managing the house in place of the landlord. -
Re: Chris Shorey Plymouth University
Well as its bumped i'll chuck my experiences out there.
Lived with them for one year, as did my girlfriend (different house). Neither of us had any particular issues. In fact they seemed rather fast at fixing any issues we had etc.
As with everything, it is all down to experience, but in my experience (not related to what ppl here have sad) most of the issues people have with Chris Shorey are just down to them not knowing their rights, what they should be doing themselves (for example ways to stop mould, again, not related to OP) and things such as that. -
Re: Chris Shorey Plymouth University
I havent heard any problems with Chris Shorey but ive been told lots of great things about Central Park Towers. They are studio flats so you dont have to share a kitchen or bathroom but there are great communal rooms so you still have the shared house/halls feel. If any of you are worried about bad quality accommodation this place is worth a look as its relatively new build and there are maintenance staff onsite. Im going into Central Park Towers from September and am sooo excited.

Re: Chris Shorey Plymouth University
I'd just like to give a quick update to this thread to act as a warning to future Plymouth university students. Whatever you do, don't go with Chris Shorey letting agents.
I'm a mature first year student staying with Chris Shorey this year. They have been absolutely appalling, from the poor, unclean state of the house when we moved in (which was supposed to have been professionally cleaned), to the myriad of broken appliances (including our boiler) to their lack of customer service and unprofessionalism from their staff.
Their most recent trick is trying to extort money from some of my housemates to cover our landlady's bank charges because Chris Shorey paid her late. They rely on bullying young students into handing over money they have no legal right to claim.
Please look at this petition which was started to remove Chris Shorey's endorsement and affiliation with Plymouth university. It was only started on 5/2/13 but has already gained over 530 signatures:

There are plenty of good landlords and properties in Plymouth, don't go with Chris Shorey, you will live to regret it!Last edited by zeeto; 07-02-2013 at 11:23. -
Re: Chris Shorey Plymouth University
I agreee with not using Chris Shorey. The agency fees they charge compared to other agencies are ridiculously high, and they have a reputation for being exploitative of students.
However, there are other letting agents in Plymouth which are good. I disagree with private landlords always being best- sometimes they can be hard to get hold of, and don't always know the law (ok so some letting agents don't either, bit I know people who have had real problems in the past because of this).
One final thing, under UK law, no matter what your letting agent says, you don't have to allow all viewings for months on end while living in a property. You have a right to quiet enjoyment, and you can negotiate this with the landlord or letting agent. -
Re: Chris Shorey Plymouth University
Hello there our agency fee's are factually competative. £75.00 for new students and £35.00 for people who are staying or moving to another property. I appreciate that there are other agents out there who do not charge, but equally there are agents who do charge.
Have you ever lived in one of our houses yourself, if so which one please? -
Re: Chris Shorey Plymouth University(Original post by gavineoz)
If possible a private landlord is ALWAYS the best. And yeah chris Shorley is disgusting. I don't really trust any agencies though.
Please can you quote a real true story about why we are disgusting please? you must give factual advice and provide me with address details. -
Re: Chris Shorey Plymouth UniversityPlease can you tell me where live so I can investigate your complaint thoroughly I am more than happy to follow everything up here.(Original post by josiebabes)
