    Crap Towns
Anyone read them? Crap Towns I and II...

Is your hometown or town of study in there?

Is it Hull, Luton, Birmingham, Nottingham, Sunderland, Hemel Hempstead, Manchester, Milton Keynes or Bedford?

Is it Hackney, Brixton, Clapham, Kew or London as a big fat WHOLE?

Post and I can tell you... or give a review of your Crappest Town!
Or strike back at the reviews of crime, poverty and excessive Ikeas!

PS Note that this is a humourous thread - no genuine hating here.

Oh and as for the excessive ikea's, there is none. Just the ikea distribution centre.

Every town is a Crap Town if you want it to be. It's just a race to the bottom with this kind of thing.

"WELL. Once, a man pooed in the phonebox in Ipswich and it was there for a month".

    Do you want a medal?

I haven't read it but if St Helens and Warrington aren't in there, then they should be!

Rough as a badgers arse but I love 'em!

Skelmersdale has to be in there, I went there for an interview and found it to be an absolute hole, all 1960s concrete buildings, mostly council housing, no decent transport links and its only claim to fame being its where Matalan have their HQ.

Edinburgh council have got to be the worst local authority in the country, the recent tram **** up is the latest in a long line. People seem to despise Dundee, but I don't think it is that bad. The worst place I have visited in England is Sunderland, that was really grim (apologies to any proud residents).

Crap Towns II - "If a town is best described by the nature of its people, then Leicester is a large drunk man throwing chicken burger wrappers in the street."

One of them is my hometown . I read the entry a while ago and it was pretty amusing if I remember rightly :p:.

See if you can guess which one it is :p:...

-Secret Millionaire has paid a visit.
-A journalist said we weren't worthy of Marks and Spencers.

    No Ikea though!

If you haven't already guessed I'm talking about Barrow-in-Furness. Personally I like it and I like the people. There are a lot of chavs but every place has its fair share of anti-social behaviour. Barrow has positive and negative attributes just like everywhere else. I've heard of so many instances where people leave Barrow as a young adult and then return when they get older because they've always felt drawn back towards Barrow.

Also, I'd like to demonstrate one thing. This is how Secret Millionaire presented my town...

And this is the building that stands on the other side of the street seen in the photo above that Secret Millionaire deliberately made sure did not get into any of their shots (for obvious reasons)...

Surpisingly (going by your description) no, but the reasons for its crapness have been echoed for other towns.

Edinburgh and Glasgow were joint 4th (one did slightly better but to prevent a civil war the result wasn't revealed). Sunderland was in there too - large numbers of 'outsider-haters' who 'want that university closed'. :giggle:

Living a few minutes away from Hackney, it doesn't deserve this accolade. Its reputation really precedes it; yes, there are some remarkably rough areas - Mare St is awful. However, it has a theatre, and a Marks and Spencer, which makes it less godawful than once thought. There are some affluent sections of Hackney anyway, and depending whether you count Stoke Newington as part of Hackney, it is practically suburbia.

    Cool
Good defence... in the book, no council worker or professional wanted to

What does it say about Mansfield?
"A location which resembles a scene in a George A Romero film. As far as I could tell Mansfield is one big precinct in which the local zombies walk around all day bumping into each other and filing in and out of Costcutter and Poundstretcher. All of the pubs have big cardboard stars."

    Agree?

I think the reason they didn't want it in the shot was because at the time there was a big banner down the side of it with Love Barrow written on it :p:. It didn't exactly fit in with their vision of a sad town populated by downtrodden people!

Yay! Only slightly crap then :p:.

When I went on a train from Glasgow to the west coast, the outskirts of Glasgow looked HORRIBLE. I can't actually say as I've never personally visited but it didn't look like an area I'd like to walk on a dark night...
