If smoking costs so much and is so bad for your health, why do people still do it?

Because we are hardwired to enjoy things that are bad for us. I quit smoking a few years ago for health reasons, and I still miss it.

Let's be honest, smoking is seriously cool, and eating McDonalds seriously tastes good.
How the hell is smoking cool?

I really dont understand it and once I told one of my friends to stop, they said that its annoying that people keep on saying to them that they should stop and its annoying.

Just a few days ago, my grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer because he smoked a few cigarettes while at university.

I know that people compare it to eating junk food etc but eating junk food doesn't immediately increase your risk of cancer like smoking does. You eat junk food and exercise to stay healthy. You cant smoke and exercise to stay healthy.....

first off i would like to say i am not referring to people who have the odd smoke on nights out or at parties. they do it for social reasons and the odd cigarette on a night out is going to cause minimal harm and besides, it doesnt cost most people (they usually get offered one).

i am referring to people who smoke lots, during the day and even chain smoke. why do they do it?

first of all, its bad for their own health. you slowly but surely digging your own grave, so to speak. not to mention short term apparent side effects such as breathlessness and tiredness.

second, even if they dont care about their own health, its so selfish to be slowly killing yourself (and eventually dying), letting your kids suffer without a parent, letting your partner suffer, letting your parents lose a kid etc. if anything, heavy smokers shouldnt be so selfish to their loved ones.

third, it costs so much to smoke. i dont know the exact figures but i do know many smokers who are financially struggling a lot because they insist on smoking so many cigarettes each day. why dont they get their priorities in order? that money could be better spent on a gym membership, or on your kids/saving up for when/if you have kids or something more useful than a bit of tobacco.

fourth, it costs the taxpayer so much. sure, if we were to ban smoking it would go underground/into the black market which isnt a good idea. and i know people only care about themselves so they couldnt care less if someone has to pay for their actions. but its still sickening to see so much money wasted each year on smoking related incidents in the NHS.

there are so many bad points to smoking. its not even like smoking is like alcohol. at least with alcohol there are some health benefits if you drink moderately and people have a fun time drinking and socialising in the process. smoking is all bad. why do people do it?
We all need something to take away the pain, some people drink, some people comfort eat, others smoke.

Because they become addicted and the body will get to the point where nicotine is needed. I'm on my way to quitting.

Actually, it has been proved lately that the true addiction rather lies in the habit of holding the cigarette in your hand. Besides this, there are certainly many reasons of why people keep smoking even though it is expensive, unhealthy, and reeking.

Some people gain a sense of power or boldness (some therapists even recommend the use of a wooden cigarette to help patients with Tourette's or patients who simply have certain behavioural problems). Others smoke because they live under the impression that smoking helps them cope with stressful situations or just because they want to have a certain amount of time of their own during the day. There are, of course, the adolescents who most of the times smoke because of their entourage. And there are those who started young and now they can not quit because they feel the need of holding something in their hands once in a while.

After all, I don't really know why this has become such a big deal. People are known to be careless of their own bodies for ages. Obesity / Anorexia, addiction to alcohol, sedative or hypnotic dependance, let alone hallucinogen / cannabis / cocaine dependance, they're all expensive, harmful and eventually killing the addict. So why putting such an emphasis on nicotine dependance, when the mortality rates of any of the above addictions are much higher?
Cannabis has never kills anyone all you is eat, stare at stuff and sleep. If you smoke to much you throw up and wake up the next morning. And smoking is pointless, I smoked for 4 months and I'm gradually quitting. When I'm around smokers I grave, and sometimes cave. But still, I don't grave it or even think about it until its my face. I quit for medical reasons though. Alcohol is ten times worse, and majority of the population use it for socialising and even pulling! So its exactly like smoking, it's **** for your body too. I found out I have a rare stomach condition which reacted and destroyed my stomach because of alcohol. I haven't touch it it in a long time. Only because it will make me sick, i love night out just like any student

Well, you are partially right with your first statement. There are no recorded deaths of people dying directly because of cannabis. But you are also describing some of the immediate effects after intoxication, relating them to a general valid rule that goes even for true addicts, which is wrong.
However, when I said it could cause death, I was not talking about the occasional intoxication. I was talking about constant intoxication, or the so-called "cannabis dependence". Even though only around 9% of users actually become addicted (unlike tobacco smokers who tend to become addicted more easily), we can be certain of one thing: cannabis smoke contains higher concentrations of carcinogenic substances than tobacco smoke.
As for my initial statement, to wit that cannabis dependence leads eventually to death, I remain ferm on the matter; I did not say that it is the simply and solely reason responsible for death.
To be more specific, cannabis addiction sometimes represents the underlying factor that encourages the development of further medical conditions, which at their own turn get the addict killed sooner or later. It causes arrhythmia and makes heavy users prone to myocardial infarction. It causes impairment in cognitive abilities, paranoia, anxiety, and confusion. Last but not least, it is now a proven fact that prolonged use of cannabis is linked to development of schizophrenia, precipitating the disorder's episodes.
All in all, the cannabis dependence sometimes induces further illnesses, which may or may not get the addict killed.

Regarding smoking tobacco, I did not claim it is useful, nor did I state the opposite. However, you are saying that smoking is by all means pointless. I tend to strongly disagree with the radicalism of your statement, because smoking is a many-sided dependence which has both its upsides and downsides. I could bring some pro-arguments to the table regarding the benefits of smoking; for example, it has a certain shielding effect against Parkinson's disease, improving attention, it is known to attenuate some aspects of the cognitive deficit induced by Alzheimer's, it alleviates Tourette Syndrome, lessening the tic frequency and severity, not to mention the fact that heavy smokers are as little prone to ulcerative colitis as one-tenth of non-smokers; and the list could go on. Evidently, the beneficial effects of smoking are nothing compared with the harm it causes (I believe there's no need to mention how smoking can actually harm you; almost everyone knows its negative effects).

As for alcohol consumption, I agree with you, because this time you had a more realistic approach, using a relatively reasonable term, namely "the majority". There are, of course, some other causes that push people towards alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, the topic is not about this kind of addiction.

Anyway, in relation to the fact that you quit both smoking and alcohol, congrats! It is a big step towards a more pleasant way of living.

drinkings bad for your health, being near motor vechiles is bad for your health, do you have such a bee in your bonnet about them?

its there body they can do as they wish, i take it your against anypone who committs suicide for whatever reason as well then as a bunch of selfish oiks who should be strung up from a yard arm? i also think were forgetting here not all smokers die..

its there money they can spend it as they please? to be quite honest its offensive that yous insinuate how people should spend there money ... i take it you buy make up [if youre a lady] and other cosmetics/drugs etc.? many of them were tested on animals, i find that offensive thus youre not aloud to do it, comprende? plus i guarentee half the clap trap youd rather buy is far morew friverlous than tobacco, which incidently does pertain to certain health benefits

now thats just a down right lie and you know it! smoking generates far more revenue for the exquecker than is put towards smoking related illness, spouting lies doesnt help your point kid.

once again ignorance is bliss, alcohol has just as few health benefits as smoking and can quite happily kill you whilst smoking may or may not kill yuou ... someone who smokes say 200 fags in a night might feel rather ****ty after it someone who chugs a few bottles of vodka will die plain and simple, plus if you drink consistantly youll box your liver, costing the nhs money. oh and smoking can be social just as drinking can aswell as asocial ... just liek drinking. at least with a cigarette you wont be judged a social parahia for having one at 8am before work whilst if you have a pint, tut tut.

= they give in to peer pressure.

I smoke very occasionally. Some of the time with others whilst out or at parties.

I do it because I enjoy it. Not because of 'peer pressure', or because I need a ****ing cigarette to socialize with other people.

An awful lot of people that smoke far more frequently than I also do so because.... They enjoy it.

I don't get why guys like you two can't seem to grasp this.

It does affect me, as a non-smoker, if I have to walk through your smoke.
If you want to use this as a reason to ban smoking, you should ban perfume as well because about 90% of the perfume I have smelt in my life I did not consent to smelling, it was due to selfish inconsiderate perfume wearers who just want to make themselves smell deceivingly nice to attract the opposite sex. Very selfish.
