Also Shakespeare's Birthday [and deathday...], for the record.
And yes, I knew both facts without looking it up

Re: St George's Day!Same here. You'd be hard pressed to find someone as patriotic as me, but celebrating the life of an imaginary man who supposedly slayed a dragon is not one of the reasons I am so proud of my country.(Original post by karateworm)
It's weird, I'm a patriot... but St Georges day does nothing for me.
None the less, happy being from England day! -
Re: St George's Day!I knew he was Turkish. In middle school, they did a St George and the Dragon play but in a modern setting. I was a Turkish knight in the play. I got to wear my leather jacket and look like a boss.(Original post by Drewski)
Not so murky that we don't know he was Turkish and never once set foot in England....
IMO if we're going to celebrate today it should be for Shakespeare, at least that has an air of actual Englishness behind it.

Re: St George's Day!Imaginary deed, definitely, but it was a real man.(Original post by navarre)

Re: St George's Day!
I just asked my flatmates that I'd remembered that it was St. George's Day, were they doing anything to celebrate? They told me 'No, we'd get told we were being racist.'
This stumped me a little. I'm Welsh and on Saint David's Day I wore my daffodil and Welsh Dragon necklace with pride and wished all my friends Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus (Happy St. David's Day), without fear or even thought of being called racist. How is having pride in your country racist?
When I put this to them however, one responded saying 'Yeah well Wales is such a small, rubbish country that everyone overdoes the pride. England don't have to because everyone knows we're the best country.'
I left the conversation confused and feeling a little bit sorry for English people who hold this attitude.
Celebrate your pride in your country! Happy Saint George's Day from a Welsh girl with a healthy amount of patriotism.

Re: St George's Day!Yep, we all celebrate it happily here too without getting called racist. Our school even celebrates it with Welsh flags and telling us to wear red. I'm also surprised by how many of the people here didn't even know it was St. George's Day, we all know on March 1st that it's St David's Day!(Original post by AliceMarilyn)

Re: St George's Day!The George Cross has been tainted by associated a bit in recent years, the EDL, English football failures... it all adds up. There's very little groundswell of pride behind a flag that we rarely see. Scotland and Wales have their own identity, best represented by a dragon [though, seriously, wtf?! There was a bit in the papers today talking about how people were more likely to fear being labeled racist for wearing/showing the St Georges Cross than any of the other national flags in Britain.

Re: St George's Day!
Eh...I'm what people would call patriotic and I don't really celebrate St George's, aside from listening to slightly more music with patriotic lyrics than usual. If I had skyrim here I might go hunt a dragon for tradition's sake. I'm too busy tomorrow to get drunk tonight, and I'm also too busy now to go and join the usual monday night festivities.
I did, however, noticed a pub had a couple of St George's flags up outside on my way back from campus. -
Re: St George's Day!Hmm that is true, but if personally I don't understand why you can't reclaim it? Yes there are some things that 'taint' the flag but here in Wales we've had our fair share of that too (Extreme Welsh nationalists etc) and still hold it up proudly. Also, isn't a Patron Saint's Day supposed to be about national pride as a whole not just flag waving? Yes we in Wales and those in Scotland have our own identity but so does England, very much so!(Original post by Drewski)

P.S We haven't got dragons? Speak for yourself, mine's called Dafydd
I thought it was sad too. Every country should be able to celebrate their heritage on their national day with pride. However what I did find sad as well was my flatmate's justification for his lack of celebration as 'we're better than your rubbish small country', when all I was doing was encouraging him to celebrate his country, not dissing it. :/(Original post by tasha96)
