So it turns out that I don't actually know any words in a language that I'm supposed to speak fluently...this is only a slight exaggeration. And the translation exam is in 17 days. And previous exams have asked for people to translate phrases such as 'An explosion of midday heat and light instantaneously threw the room into an effulgent dazzle, as though some importune and unduly luminous angel had misguidedly picked that place for an epiphany' and 'He scraped its surface to remove the hard brown cankerous coating of wax, and beheld a pea.' Oh my days! *cries* Translation was meant to be my best paper, too.

Minor relief - have found that you have to get 2:2 standard in the project and Third standard in the modules to pass the year. I reckon that I probably have this, which is nice.

I am feeling your pain so much right now. Translation both ways is all I've done all day! I'm currently translating a past into English paper where the text is about the cultural significance of sofa catalogues and contains the Russian word for 'penopolyurethane', which I didn't even know was a thing! The proses are a million times worse. I did one timed and largely without a dictionary last night, which went really well, but most of them are significantly worse and make me want to cry a lot when I look at them because I don't know any words. I've started rewriting the English in the passages into simpler sentences that actually make sense before beginning to translate, but obviously there won't be time for that in the exam...

I didn't know the word "effulgent". I think that I would do even worse in translation than you, since evidently I don't even know enough words in the one language that I can speak fluently (English) :p: Sadly my talent for languages is even more minute than my talent for Engineering.

Seriously bad day. Every single question I've tried to do, I've failed at, and on the one paper I thought would be okay. Not to mention the fact I've been recommended to go to Addenbrookes (nothing serious!)... and I honestly can't afford that time out. It all feels a bit pointless right now

If you are going to Addies I recommend bringing something to do with you. You normally have to wait for ages... Hope it is ok though!
Went to Addies on my first ever day in Cambridge to get stitches removed. Had to wait three hours although my college mum was very patient and waited with me.

Yeah, this is why I'm reluctant to go - because it really isn't anything bad. It's just a pain in exam term and is adding to the list of things that are stressing me out. At least there's a long May Week at the end of it all :/

Okay, this is as much for my benefit as yours, but:

Exam term sucks. You never get as much done as you want, exams are always looming (I can actually just see the top of the UL out of my window, so it's kind of literal for me), other people seem to think they can demand as much of your time as they did before and it always feels like you're doing less than other people who are working 16 hours a day, getting up at 7am to work or never seem to leave the house.

But things have a remarkable habit of coming together towards the end, especially here (god only knows how), and there's a couple of weeks left. And if it feels like things aren't progressing fast enough, or they aren't progressing at all, it's worth remembering that it's a marathon rather than a sprint (apart from the medics, who seem to be sprinting for 26 miles) and that exam term's much harder psychologically without the little achievement boost from getting supervisions and things done right, and doubly so as you're a natsci and still have lectures if you're like my flatmates.

And I say this as someone who spent the whole of yesterday trying to get a scratch choir together to do a choral YouTube version of yesterday's xkcd, and basically got nothing done.

(Also, go to Addenbrookes - these things are always less difficult than you think and seem to have a much bigger effect on mood and productivity. I took an hour out and changed my room from "pigsty" to merely "born in a barn" and I feel much, much better.)

    Watch out

Bare in mind overall Project + Modules must average out as a 2.2 at least, (if it was to average a 3rd) thats a fail ie you need a high 2.2 in project to perhaps balance out a 3rd in exams...

This is true, but I'm looking at a distinction in the project according to my supervisor... and given that I've already written 15 pages of the report I'm guessing that a Merit at least won't be too difficult to achieve...

You could, but I distinctively remembered Lupus' post being time-marked as 19:35 when it was 19:30 and when I posted it got inserted before his.
