Portsmouth Accommodation - Current numbers
Hey,
I was at a University Open day on Saturday the 21st and there was a talk concerning accommodation, and there was some information which I thought I'd post on here cos it was quite interesting.
I found out that the University has only sent out 2000 accommodation packs at this point in time. There are 3000 hall rooms overall.
This certainly made me feel more comfortable as they say they offer rooms on a first come first serve basis, so for people who have applied already I'd say the chances are strong of getting into halls. If you haven't applied yet then you still have time, but hurry up! :P
So, I hope this comes as welcome news to anyone else applying for halls

Re: Portsmouth Accommodation - Current numbersYeah, there are about 2000 en suite rooms which are more popular, however a lot of 2000 accommodation packs sent out won't have been sent back yet and a lot of the people with packs might not be applying for halls.(Original post by nmr1991)
Yeah but the remaining 1000 rooms might be in the halls of residence like Trust and other shared bathroom non-ensuite, as ensuite is probably the most preferable and come within the 2000 rooms available. -

Re: Portsmouth Accommodation - Current numbers
Does anyone know what things will be given to us if we do get a room? Things like, cork notice and dry wipe boards, basic kitchen appliciances etc. I know we have to supply most of it but I was just wondering if anyone knew if they supply a few bits and bobs.
Also, does that mean everyone in halls will be studying something different or will they try match us up? -
Re: Portsmouth Accommodation - Current numbersI wouldn't worry about it, I still haven't accepted my offer (I do intend to go but I'm waiting until after my visit next wednesday) so there may be quite a few people who don't get into halls, looking for flats to rent :](Original post by tommym)
What are the chances of me getting Uni halls now? I've only accepted an offer this week. :/
Well, there's one at least! o/ -
Re: Portsmouth Accommodation - Current numbersIn James Watson (and I think the same for the other Guildhall ensuites) you get a wall mirror, bed, bedside table, desk, chair, wardrobe, shelves, bin, pin board and chest of drawers. The kitchen has a microwave and oven but you have to get your own toaster/kettle and so on.(Original post by Waqar.)

Re: Portsmouth Accommodation - Current numbers
As i have just finnished my first year let me say Margaret Rule Hall is by far the best for the social side. Had the best year of my life there and met loads of peeps who i have made life long friendships with. The self contained flats system is the best because your flatmates become your life. I love my flatmates and they were like family.
Other halls i visted didnt seem to have the same bond as many of maggie rules flats had. Though i must say Harry Law is equally good for party's. The layout is good in Harry Law but noisy as the rooms are all along the corridoor so expect people to come running and screaming down the corridoor at 4am (myself included approx twice a week lol) and wake you up.
Expect fire alarms constantly in the first stint up till christmas. In my first 4 months having 3/4 fire alrms a week was the norm, sometimes 2 a night, some people never learn (sigh). so annoying when u have come in pissed at 3am, pass out on the bed and you have to walk down flights of stairs and sit in the rain for half an hour waiting to be back in. It never got easier but less frequent. A tip is to put headphones in and drown the noise out because trust me, there was never a real fire.
Halls will likely be the best experience of your life. If your a quiet person then learn to be outgoing because uless by some spark of good luck you get a quiet flat, you will be living with party animals. There wasnt a flat in our whole building i could say was boring. Everyone seemed to be pretty mental.
James Watson and Trafalger may look the most appealing because they're kitted out but there seems to be a general opinion amongst the hundreds of people i came across that they were both boring and uneventful for the most art. The crapyness of Bateson is what makes it good and the general 'run-down-ness' of the other halls is what makes them so great. There is great comrardery amongst the students there. If you get in Maggie Rule, Bateson or Harry law it may seem run down at first but i guarentee you, they are the funnest halls to be in. Bateson has a reputation for being a dump, and it is, but its bloody mental in there. I'll give them that one.
90% of my uni experience, scrap that, 100% of my uni experience was my life in halls. The course just gets in the way of the social life! Oh and btw get an en-suit if you have the chance. Shared toilets and shower may seem like a cheaper alternative but after experience of both believe me, theres nothing more satisfying that being able to sh*t and shower when you please than have to use shared facilities that are 20 years old, really skanky and generally disgusting.Last edited by muzza798; 05-06-2012 at 01:00. -
Re: Portsmouth Accommodation - Current numbersif you're found, you get fined i believe, like £80 or so, but that might just be hearsay(Original post by raechelle)
that's one of the best and most helpful posts i've seen about portsmouth uni in general! thank-you
i just wondered, what happens if you conveniently 'forget' to leave when fire alarms go off?
