    'Creative' Architecture Courses
Hello! So I currently thinking about universities that would be good to apply for (I will start uni in 2013).

I am very interested in architecture and art, so I would really love to apply for a course which looks at the more creative side of architecture. I am studying maths and physics at the moment, so the technical side isn't too much of a problem anyway, but I'd love to bring my artwork into it somehow?

The current universities that I have researched are:

    • Central Saint Martins
    • Edinburgh
    • Brighton

Let me know what your thoughts are!
    Thanks! ♥

The Mac (Glasgow school of art) takes a very artistic approach to architecture more so than edinburgh, I would say, having seen them both - just my opinion though

They don't, ironically (at least compared to others). They are actually one of the least artistic schools in the UK.

The most creative ones are in London - Bartlett, Westminster, Greenwich and there's also Sheffield, Nottingham, Oxford Brookes, Northumbria, Liverpool John Moores and some others I'm probably forgetting. The Bartlett is by far the most creative. I wouldn't recommend Greenwich though because they'll probably fail you.

Bear in mind though that most courses will allow you to be very creative if you want to be.

I found them very artistic compared to some of the other places I applied :L they just seem to have a fairly holistic approach to architecture as an art form in itself, not just looking at architecture but 'actual' art, life drawing etc in order to influence work etc idk, that was just the impression i got

Thanks for all these suggestions. I have researched the Bartlett and it looks really good. Although, it is part of UCL, so I guess it will be very competitive?

That sounds really interesting because I think art plays a big influence on architecture. ♥

From the places I've applied to definitely Sheffield and Liverpool John Moores are the most art based. LJMU is based in the art department of the university so there is a lot of creative input from the other sections of the department. I would say that although Nottingham is quite artistic, but the work students make seems much more engineering based than Sheffield or LJMU (also Nottingham don't ask for a portfolio, which is always a sign of the weighting of art in a course).

So will you be starting uni in September? Are you applying for an architecture course?

Yes and yes, I've firmed Sheffield and have LJMU as my backup

Feel free to ask me about the application, obviously I can't talk about the actual course yet. Oh and I also applied to Nottingham, Newcastle and Northumbria so if you want to know anything specific about them just ask.

Cool. Did you have to have an interview or show a portfolio as part of your application? I've started to think about my portfolio, and a lot of it will be paintings and drawings I've done in art (not particularly based on architecture) do universities mind this?

Out of all of the places I applied to I only had to have an interview at Northumbria (with a portfoilio, it was unlimited so I could put whatever I wanted in it, but that was a paper version) and for Sheffield I had to send a digital portfolio, ten pages of work including a piece specified by them with an explanation to it. But all the others didn't ask for anything else. Most of my portfolio for Sheffield was my A2 (a bit of AS work), some work experience designs and some sketches and etchings I made outside of school.

They all say it doesn't have to be based on architecture but personally I think it is risky to have no work with buildings in, so maybe put some quick sketches in of buildings if you're uncertain. I was OK as all of the work I have ever produced in art is buildings, it has kind of become my thing.

A lot of the fine art I have been doing at the moment has been quite abstract and I've been focusing on texture, but I will start moving onto buildings at college. I have done a few sketches at home of buildings, so I'll keep working on that and hopefully that will be fine! ♥

Did they ask you specific questions on architects at Northumbria? Did you do any research before?

Yeah that sounds fine, like I said I don't think you need to have buildings, it's optional.

As for Northumbria, well that was really annoying. I prepared really well for questions about architects and got NO questions about architects or your own interest in the subject now. That really annoyed me as I wanted to prove that I knew stuff. Instead they asked a lot of questions none of which really indicated if you would be good at the subject. But they had a few interviewers that day so maybe I just got one who didn't ask those questions and the others did, who knows. But if you go to interview do prepare for questions like that. A friend of mine had an architecture interview and she knew no architects up to the day before it, when she asked me to give her some to talk about. They then asked who her favourite architect was so it was a good thing she did some research.

Why? Lots of people have different opinions on Glasgow School of Art.

i would say it's either csm or westminster. i personally prefer csm, mostly because of the reputation of the college as an art institute, but the course seems nice too. i've read the riba report on the architecture:spaces and objects course, and it is supposed to have improved a lot and is still improving. according to riba the saint martins atmosphere makes it unique. i would advise you to read the reports of schools you are interested in, they are hidden somewhere on www.architecture.com

ps.:i received an offer from westminster last year, and my portfolio wasn't all that good then - or at least compared to my current portfolio - and i'm not sure what to think about it.

I'm interested about CSM. Were you interviewed? How did it go?
At any interviews were you asked about any famous architects or architectural movements?

i wasn't able to attend the portfolio review/interview, so i just uploaded my portfolio to flickr and sent them the link. i was sure they wouldn't accept me because of this, but they ended up giving me an offer.
at the other interviews they never examined my factual knowledge as such, they only asked if i had favourite architects, or buildings. they ask questions to see how you think, but they don't want to test you.
