Nah [LOL, i love Aragorn] i wanted to say - in a 'nice' way - that if you don't know and understand religion and why people hold certain views, then you tend to look down on them - i.e. become arrogant.
i follow ya, yea. Also agree

Of course I do, as a 17 year old atheist who has read the Wikipedia article on atheism, I know everything there is to know about philosophy and religion.

Why should I look down on them as a person? That type of thinking is ridiculous in my view. Just because one is religious doesn't make one less intelligent or less respectable than you or I.

I don't agree with their beliefs in the slightest but a lot of the people I know probably haven't really contested their beliefs because they're scared of hell or something like that.

We're humans first and foremost. The beliefs come later. As long as they aren't dicks It's all ok

I absolutely look down on religious people in fact I feel religious people are less intelligent for believing in such nonsense.

Fellow atheists do you also feel the same way?
I do not believe but I certainly don't look down on those who do

I find them strange... And in some cases scary. But 'look down on' is something which goes against my moral code..... So, no.

    Of course it does :lolwut:

If someone told you that they thought Hagrid of Harry Potter was the omnipotent creater of all things in the universe, surely you'd think he was mad or mentally feeble?

You surely wouldn't think him intelligent or respectable, would you?

    Why not?

    They're delusional.
He looked down on them in terms of intelligence, that's just stupid.

Religious people can't be automatically classed as dumb.
Pretty sure there are plenty of religious people who are much more intelligent than you or I.

Then let them be delusional. Doubt they'd wanna know someone like you anyway (Y)

Surely they ought to be expected to have the mental strength to question such beliefs, though?

I never accepted anything my parents said without explanation and rational scrutiny - for example, if they supported a particular political party, I would ask why and ask questions about it, then do my own research, and make up my own mind about it.

Why would people not do the same about religious beliefs?
Religion imposes itself on the vulnerable. The power of indoctrination is such that to scrutinise one's beliefs is completely unfathomable. Again, not entirely their fault. If you want to look down on the more vulnerable members of society, go ahead, it would only make you a massive ****.

Not at all, if someone finds solace in religion then that's all fine and dandy. For all I know there could be some sort of higher-power, so to look down on those who believe in it would be ridiculous.

religious people in general no. however, i do find it very difficult to put myself on the same level as creationists, in some areas (for instance in scientific matters, i would consider myself above them as they pretty much dont believe in most of it). the fact that they can refute all of that evidence for evolution etc just does ignorance and narrow - mindedness (which are not necessarily bad or stupid characteristics) and does confuse me sometimes.
however, i think its ignorant and narrow - minded to believe that certain people are superior/more intelligent just because they think something different. tbh, that sounds like bullying.

Re: Atheists do you look down on religious people?
i'm an atheist and have been for all my life as far as i can remember despite the majority of my family being religious. to a certain extent i look down on religious people, but mainly the people that can't accept that 'the bible' can be interpreted in different ways and actively look down and even hate people who dont look at life in the same way as them and people who have no personal views of there own instead live life following these religious rules, that even if they are real were created quite a while ago... on the other hand i don't look down at religious people because at least they believe in something bigger then us and have a rare and annoying happiness that something bigger is in play and if people die there looked after etc.. if someone completely looks down on someone else because of their religious beliefs then there not exactly different from the religious people who wont accept and actively look down on other people that offend their 'god'.
~Religious people if God had wanted everyone to believe in him completely he'd have made it that way don't you think, instead everyone is different and everyone should just accept that somewhere in the world there is at the very least someone who beliefs in the exact opposite of you and its there right to do so, you know free will and all that.
~Atheists we need to accept that also someone somewhere beliefs in the exact opposite to us and we should accept that sometimes we arent going to agree with someone but dont look down on someone because of their beliefs because its no different to looking down on someone for being poor, someone who can't read, teenage parents etc.
People need to accept everyone has different opinions and only share their opinions (respectively) if someone asks.

Not necessarily. Watch Daniel Dennett on believing in the belief in god. For many people (at least in England) religion doesn't play an important role to them. They're just religious for the sake of it.

There are many intelligent religious people and I think it'd be stupid to judge their intelligence solely on that belief.

you spelled of course wrong but ANYWAY

I'm pretty sure atheists don't believe in spirits and devils.
That's worst than believing in god.
    That's borderline retarded.
you are completely right, I have seen Perseveranze post some really dodgy posts about terrorism etc.

I can't take anyone seriously if I find out they are religious.

It's akin to thinking that Mickey Mouse is real and rules the universe - if anyone seriously espoused that belief, they would be rightly thought of as delusional and completely mad. I see no reason why the religious are not treated in such a way.

They're just laughably silly and childish.
I don't agree with your first point as for example, would you take an accomplished and successful doctor's word on medicine(or diagnosis) any less seriously just because they happen to believe in a God or any other deity?

What is objectively wrong with feeling unsympathetic to people that are weak?

I don't look down on them, I just find their views completely ridiculous and try to ignore anything to do with them as much as possible...

I thought I was perfectly clear - I will not take anyone seriously if I find out that they are religious.

What do atheists think of near death experiences which have been verified multiple times to be true in various different ways which would seem to suggest there is more to life than 'evolution'? It is something that has really started to interest me recently...
