Re: Birkbeck or uel for psychology?
Birkbeck is a great uni and they have a very good reputation too. They are ranked as one of the top 200 universities in the world (they just don't show up on traditional UK rankings as they mainly offer part-time courses and these rankings are based on full-time courses) whereas UEL is reguarly ranked down the bottom of the list for all unis in the UK. Another good thing is that Birkbeck is conveniently located in central London around 15mins walk from Oxford St and it's very easy to get to. The lecturers are very good and you have an interesting mix of people on the courses as many people are mature students. I definitely recommend going to Birkbeck out of these two.

Re: Birkbeck or uel for psychology?
Hi there! I don't know much about Birkbeck but I live very close to UEL (pretty much across the road from one of the campuses) and I wouldn't advise anyone to go there if they could go somewhere else to be honest. My college has strong links with them due to UEL being very local so I've been there for countless open days and lectures and I've gotten to meet several students already studying there. Basically, from what I've gathered UEL is more of a party university for the full time undergrads that have just come out of college. I've also heard many of the students complain about the teaching standards and whatnot, although I suppose you'll hear this at most universities.
To be quite honest, I wouldn't want to pay the £9000 tuition fees for a university with such a low reputation, and I'm not talking about league tables.
Although it's your choice, just make sure you do your research. -

Re: Birkbeck or uel for psychology? The best thing to do is to e-mail the Student Helpdesk with your question as they can make an assessment of your individual situation. Entry requirements vary for different subjects and degrees, so it's difficult to give a general answer. You can find the Helpdesk's contact details here:(Original post by emb-lckless)

Re: Birkbeck or uel for psychology? The staff at the Helpdesk have always been very friendly and quick to respond when I have contacted them. Don't worry, at Birkbeck there are a lot of students from so-called 'non-traditional backgrounds' (ie. you didn't go straight through school, do A-levels and then on to university right away) so they are used to these kind of questions and are happy to help.(Original post by emb-lckless)

Re: Birkbeck or uel for psychology?
Hi,
I start Pyschology part-time at Birkbeck this October. I am from a "non-traditional" academic background and although finished GCSE's with excellent results over ten years ago i didn't follow through with 'A' Levels and went straight to work. I was accepted to Birkbeck as a part-time student because of my lack of qualifications (less than 320 UCAS points)... so this means one extra year, BUT less hours per week which means i can continue my day job whilst studying.
I have worked in PR for the past five years and have decided that it's high time for a change.
The teaching standard is great at Birkbeck by all accounts, the reputation is excellent and the school of science is one of the top 5 research facilities in the country. It is also the ONLY uni to offer night courses and specialises in teaching those whilst they work. In fact, if you look into the history that is how it began...
I would DEFINITELY choose Birkbeck over UEL and if you don't have the qualifications then you may be able to get onto a part-time course.
Best of luck whatever you choose!
