Might be a silly question but isnt there a minimum height for basketball? or is it just benefical?
Honestly its an advantage if your not tiny but take me im 5ft 7/8 possibly 9 if im pushing it. I play U18 for Cardiff and everyone is a good half a foot taller but i can easily say im one of the better players. Its all about skill, speed and well discipline. Not gonna lie height would be great but it doesn't detract me :P

Cycling. Be warned though, training-wise it's one of the most time, effort and money consuming sports there is. But it's also really easy to get hooked and have a lot of fun! 'Bike rider' and 'cyclist' aren't remotely the same thing though, so be prepared to suffer immensely if you want to do it at a competitive level.

Ive decided I need a new sport to keep active and fit.

Im up for most things, I like outdoor stuff and am up for both team or individual sports or activities.

What do other people do? Give your sport a plug and help me get ideas
I'm not going to plug anything until we have a little more information.

Are you at uni? Are you already any good at any sport in particular? Do you want it for casual exercise or serious hardcore exercise? Would you prefer a contact or non-contact sport? How important is the social factor? Indoor or outdoor, team or individual, summer or winter?

Surfing looked alright when I lived in Australia (as look as you watch out for jellies) but might be pretty cold in Scotland even if Tiree is a world class surf spot. brrrrr

    Slacklining?

Not studying but a graduate so have access to all uni groups/facilities. Im toned and active but no cardio fit. Used to do Equestrian sports, athletics and occasional cycling and am looking for ideas so contact/non contact or whether its winter /summer doesnt matter.
In the end you don't have to plug your sport only if you want to.

Honestly, if you have a good wetsuit, the cold will not matter.

And I saw slacklining the other day. Youtube it, looks quite fun and "spiritual" I know that seem quite gay but it I suppose it's a more extreme form of yoga...

    Football. I absolutely love it.

I'm on the 2nd team so it's not really high pressure stuff, it's a lot of fun, socialising but obviously we want to do as well as possible.

As a beginner in a similar vein to you fitness wise this year and not having played before I was a little nervous, but people are friendly and as long as the team is fun, you don't have to be world class to be part of the team and I'm in much better shape as a result.

Cricket. Batsmen have had fractured skulls from bouncers.
I needed 18 stitches in a head wound after I got hit while standing at short-leg (without a helmet, cos I'm an idiot!) Dangerous sport man!

P.S Won't ever field there again!

Strange Blue mostly. I can't play open tour this year though, which is a bit unfortunate.

    Squash.

Burns a shedload of calories if you put effort into it, it's a fast-paced game with simple rules that are easy to pick up, and yet can get quite complicated and tactical if you get into it, and when it's miserable outside you can still play without fear of getting rained on.

Also, the sound of the ball hitting the wall when you give it a proper smack...Possibly the most satisfying thing ever. There is no better way to release any pent-up frustration, in my opinion.
I second that. Cheap, fun, widely accessible and one of the best sports you can play for getting/keeping fit.

I like ice skating but I force myself to do running as I can't always get to the rink. Running is not enjoyable at all, but it does work.
