Really? I just think Szcezny would benefit more from direct competition from another youngish (Vorm's 28) decent keeper rather than someone like Schwarzer from who he probably would learn things only an older head could teach you, but will be retiring in a couple of years if not end of this season. He'll probably want another world cup with Australia so 2 seasons max.
That would probably result in one of or both of the keepers becoming discontent, though: goalkeeper isn't really a position you'd want much rotation in, generally.

Yeah but that would come about through one keeper out performing the other and getting more game time. Not saying they should rotate them, just create healthy competition for places. If you don't like sitting on the bench, out perform/train whoever's keeping you out.

That's not really how the goalkeeper position works though. They are best when playing consistently and building up trust and communication with a consistent defence. Playing one goalkeeper off against the other is a recipe for disaster. Goalkeepers more than any other position need to 'know their place' be it as the first or second choice.

All this talk of having another GK that could challenge Scz is really pointless. If we accept he's our no1 then leave it there.

Look all around and show me a team where they have a no2 GK that is there to challenge their main keeper.

There's a reason why Chelsea are happy for Courtois to remain at A.Madrid whilst they continue with Turnball as their no2.

Manchester United? Didn't Ferguson keep swapping between De Gea and Lindegaard earlier in the season?

In his last year of contract RVP isn't worth over £18m. In a sense he's worth over that for Arsenal i believe, but to other clubs he isn't. Arsenal having a team built around him makes me say this. I don't think it's a coincidence he generally looks average for Holland.

He looks average for Holland because he does not have a good understanding with the likes of Robben and Sneijder in the national team. At Arsenal he has Song and Walcott, of whom both have provided him with an enormous amount of assists this past season. And yeah, van Persie is worth a minimum of £30m if you consider the fact that Nasri was sold for £24m last August and he is an inferior player and van Persie had an even better season than Nasri.

So if he does leave, do you guys think we will get a replacement or use Giroud as our main striker?

Imagine if we got Falcao :teeth:, but obviously never going to happen

I don't see why fans are so pessimistic regarding his future anyway:

Juventus - It would be a small step up because they will be favourites for the title next year and they have a competitive team but he would be moving to an inferior league that is in decline.

Barcelona - Villa, Messi, Sanchez and Pedro all play in his position. It's not going to happen unless Villa is sold.

Real Madrid - Benzema and Higuain, not going to happen unless one of them leaves.

Man City - Tevez, Aguero, Balotelli and Dzeko. Only two of them play at once, if Dzeko and Tevez leave then van Persie will go. It's unlikely though.

So the only realistic option is Juventus but is he going to leave Arsenal for Juventus? I doubt it.

It would be a pretty bad decision to use Giroud as a replacement for van Persie as he'd have to take over his role as the focal point of the attack. Giroud needs time to settle in so if van Persie does leave we need to reinvest the money in a top striker such as Huntelaar or Cavani.

The reason transfer news about him is intensifying is because he's apparently rejected a contract at Santos, because he wasn't happy with the reported 112,000 per week contract they offered him; 'I thought it would be something better', he said. That should pretty much conclusively rule us out, even without the interest of Barca, Madrid, Chelsea, the Manchester and Milan clubs, as is being reported. :p:

I think the reason that was possible was because Van Der Saar had just retired and United didn't have an immediate confirmed first-choice yet: De Gea was clearly brought with the future in mind, and Lindegaard had been quite highly rated but only played for much smaller clubs - they were probably both all right to sit on the bench for periods and fight it out over the course of the (initial) season. We had a period similar to that that was enforced by injuries, playing Almunia, Fabianski and Szczesny over the course of the season. Since last season, though, Szczesny has been our unquestioned first-choice, and has hardly faced a whole lot of criticism as to whether or not he's apt in the role (in the long term, at least): it probably would not do his confidence or his happiness at the club much good to bring in someone who would contend for rather than back up his place.

My worry is that if RVP does stay, it will be like Cesc the season before he left. I cant help but think that if he really wanted to stay, he would have just come and said "I love Arsenal and want to stay." And I can see that reflecting in his performances; if his heart's not in it any more, it's only fair we let him move on.

Southampton fans must hate us. :p: This is one that interests me, though - Gibbs is all right, but I'd very much welcome a long-term big-potential player at LB.

Just reading through the thread and...

Wasn't RVP worth £35 million at the end of the season?!? Those were definitely the numbers being thrown around, not just by Arsenal fans. Why the sudden change to £15 million?

If we get a bid from outside England for £25 million we'll sell I think. Last top level contract, 29 years old and injury prone.

How are Juventus only a small step up? They've just gone a season unbeaten and formed the backbone of the Euro finalists. The Italian league isn't vastly inferior or declining as you make out, either.

Decent chance Dzeko will leave, I don't think Madrid or Barca will go in for him though.

One thing though, why has he not been linked with Chelsea? Seems a better fit than anywhere but Juve.

IF he goes to Chelsea they might be able to make up the points the 7 points between us and them. To like 4 points?
