The hate for Islam is unreal! (Especially on TSR).
Honestly, it is quite scary to think that in the 21st Century there is still so much hate for Islam on 'The Student Room' (TSR) and in the world. I am a Christian, so your, "you're muslim, you would say that" argument is truly void.

Firstly, I would like to point out that this thread is not particularly directed at those after an healthy debate, however some people are just plain rude and disrespectful. Comments like "Islam is cruel", "Islam is evil" are just ridiculous and quite uneducated points to make.

To be frank, it is like some of you have been totally brain-washed by your parents, or even the media into thinking Islam is this cruel Religion with no redeeming qualities. Can I ask, do you have any muslim friends? If so, then what were they like? Did they seem cruel or evil?

If you have never met a muslim, then I can't see how you would form such frightening opinions without even having talked to a muslim, or even getting to know a muslim.

Also, can I ask why so many threads mocking and insulting a Religion are allowed to be made on TSR? Quite shocking.

So you don't think it's appropriate to criticise religion?

To be fair Islam is cruel. So is Christianity.... You can bury your head in the sand and make overly PC threads or you can do some research for yourself... Yeah, there is a cultural element to arranged marriage etc, but you look at how women are treated in middle eastern countries, the repression is horrible.

ever think maybe it's you, not the haters that are un-informed, maybe you should go read more about muslim values/beliefs and some particular Qu'ran passages

read about a lot of the things it teaches, they even still teach that water and salt can not be mixed in one of the top muslim-only private schools in Britain because apparently it says so in the Qu'ran

not to mention a lot of muslims reject evolution so much so that it is banned in some countries. Soo as you can see it is quite detrimental to science too among all the other things

Criticism is perfectly fine. There is a fine line between criticism and insulting comments.

I have read large proportions of the Quran. Maybe you skipped 99% of it which practices peace.

That's not the point - religions can all be criticised but Islam's being scrutinised A LOT more than any other religion, especially by the media.

People on forums like to cause controversy by exaggerating their views. They do this simply to get noticed because they seek attention. It's the same reason everyone uses internet forums.

The way women are treated in Middle Eastern countries is cultural, not because of Religion. There are many muslim women who are not oppressed. The muslim girls I know are not oppressed. Nothing to do wth Religion.

I'm thinking you might have skipped the hidden 1% that practices the more horrific side. You know, the one which people try to keep out of the limelight, because it's not politically correct to mention it.

Indeed, but one might also fairly say that it's scary to think that in the 21st Century there is still Islam, Christianity, Judaism or any religion whatsoever.

Personally I think it all belongs back in the dark ages.

I've met good Christians and kind Muslims, people whose lives are improved by their beliefs. But in my experience they are the minority. All religion is a tyranny which holds us back as a race.

No, the 1% that you highlight, dissect and twist to make your point justified. That 1%.

My Religion doesn't hold me back. I am a contributing member society, studied Biology etc. Its an urban myth to say Religion holds us back when there are millions of atheists out there trying to prove Religion as false.

Calling someone's Religion evil is never a fair comment.

That's not totally true and you know it...

First define repression... I think Freud definition suffices

'Repression is not the result of abstention from performing the instinctive act. It is the result of believing that the instinctive act is dirty, and of refusing to admit to oneself that such a motive may come to one's mind or engage one's thinking. In this sense repression becomes an unconscious feeling which may not be cured by performing the instinctive act. He who performs the instinctive act but believes that he is committing a degrading and dirty act is a person who suffers from repression, though he may commit such an act twenty times a day. Every time he commits such an act, there shall ensue a conflict within his psyche between what he has done and what he ought to have done. It is this conscious and unconscious conflict which gives birth to complexes and psychological disorders.'

Repression evident in the Quran: (Internet search but I do plan on reading it)

"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them, refuse to share their beds, beat them; but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means: For Allah is Most High, great." Quran 004.034''

"And say to the believing women that they should (...) not display their beauty and ornaments except what appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex" Quran 024.031 (this verse is typically used to justify the ignominious enforcement of the hijab)

'..and get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women" Quran 002.282

Calling someone's Religion evil is never a fair comment.
Catholicism burned thousands of innocent women as witches and has consistently covered up child abuse and silenced those who most needed help at the worst time in their life.

    Isn't that evil?
