tired of waiting? ten ways to beat the anxiety
Hi, I am an overseas applicant applying for my PhD in the United Kingdom. I made one application for 2012 entry, and hope (not) to make another 3-4 applications for 2013 entry. For 2012 entry, I have an unconditional offer of admission at my first choice university under my first choice guide. I am now waiting to hear on my funding application, without which I cannot even think of going to the university.
But, the whole process has been an endless wait. Contacting guides, asking for references, waiting for the admissions portal status to change, and now for the funding.
Have you also spent long hours staring at the computer screen, waiting for emails to come to your inbox, waiting for any sliver of hope? If yes, how did you beat the wait?
I am seriously tiring of it. And hoping sincerely that this will be the end of it for me.
Any ideas on beating the waiting? Your favourites ways of distracting your self, catching enough sleep, enjoying today without chewing off your fingernails and emptying beer pints....
Let's make a list of ten best ways of doing it. -

Hey cryptic-clues,
You are not the only one. In fact, my case is the same. I can't say that I have a top ten list, but below are few of my methods:
1) Walking
2) Shopping
3) Solving some other urgent stuff
4) Working
5) Music/cinema
6) Sleeping
As you can see nothing extraordinary, just the routine things. -

1) Playing with my son and he is two years old: its quick, relaxing and works well.
2) Surfing The Student Room: not too sure if it adds to the anxiety or relieves it, but it engages nonetheless.
3) Smoking -
Re: tired of waiting? ten ways to beat the anxiety
Take a "trip" somewhere...away from your PC away from everything. Switch off any mobile devices for that duration...and just enjoy the little joys of life being care-free & having some fun.
Then go back home and look at your inbox and viola...all the emails you've been waiting for with positive feedback....
...sorry, that is just a day-dream I'm having sitting by my PC, freshing my browser every min, to see if I've been admitted somewhere...
Its tough! We just have to learn to be patient.
Seriously, I hope you hear back soon and good luck with your applications. -

I think its one of those suspended animation kind of people, where the next actions are so difficult to judge/decide/undertake. And the left eyeball is trained on the little tab mark on the left corner for signs of any new incoming mails.
As for going on holidays, my wife is on a teaching spree, so holidays need to wait for another three months or so!
And good luck to you too. -
Re: tired of waiting? ten ways to beat the anxietyI am but only in the sense that I still don't have any offers yet. All of mine are still under consideration. Had an interview on Wed (no feedback yet), got another one coming in early June. All the rest, still nothing...nada...niks!(Original post by cryptic-clues)

Tick-tock-tick-tock!
My wife wants us to go away in the summer...no chance, got no money and I need to keep saving for my course (If I don't get it funded). -
Re: tired of waiting? ten ways to beat the anxietygot admitted, but was not awarded the funding. They say I am on the reserve list. So I need to wait through the summer in hope that someone will drop out. And I will move up the list. More wait!(Original post by VENIVIDIVICI)

Re: tired of waiting? ten ways to beat the anxiety
I had the same feelings for a while when I was waiting and my solution was just to make alternate plans in case things didn't go my way.
Once I realised that there were other options acceptable to me (even if some involved saving money with a view to further study with a view to reapplication etc.) I came to see the wait as an exciting time. It helped that it was a really nice summer and I found a load of fun stuff to do in my free time off work and visited with various friends and family and soforth. -
Re: tired of waiting? ten ways to beat the anxietyWell, I didn't!(Original post by TBD)
I'm intrigued to know who gave my previous post the thumbs-down. Care to comment further re your attitude to work?
TBD
But I do come from the world of work. I have been in it for eight years now, and I was seriously looking at academia as my future location, full time, instead of the current bursts where I teach for course modules.
I have been working as a researcher in the field, was hoping to find a place to build it further, dig in my heels! And I am not very far from it: I am married to one and work with senior academics on a daily basis.
So, it seems like a place where I will be able to make a contribution, however minor, where my politics and writing will find wider audience (at work they believe in early diagnosis and prescriptions), and where I could be intellectually engaged!
I haven't completed my round of making early applications, including for funding. So, I must persevere and see it through before I make up my mind on whether I belong or not!
