havent had chance to say goodbye :(
im at uni and my realllly gorgeous dog who is my best friend is going to have to be put to sleep probably today

hes been half blind/deaf for a while now and has had back problems for about 7 years where he goes through stages of not being able to move, always arching his back and is clearly in unbearable agony. We used to take him to the vet all the time and they never knew what was wrong with him even after loads of x rays. but he used to just stand in the corner for hours and not move we almost put him down because of this, but then he seemed to improve.

But now hes got incontinent and loads of blood in his poo so my dads taking him to the vets tonight and i havent got a chance to say goodbye because we think hes going to be put down.

Hes really old but hes my best friend. Im gonna miss cuddling him, he was like a teddy bear, so nice and loyal to everyone. Hes such an intelligent dog

I'm sorry to hear about that It's a horrible experience. We had one of our dogs put down in 2008, but I still think about her everyday as we got her when I was just a few months old, so we grew up together and she was very much my best friend.

I recommend you look through photos, make a collage, think about the awesome times you had together and remember what a great life your dog had. It helps to ease the sadness a little

GO HOME NOW. Just go. If you don't go, and your buddy is put to sleep you will never forgive yourself. Trust me.

Try and spend as much time as you can with him, love and cherish him whilst you can.
He is old, and you expect his death deep down, even though you don't want to admit it. I know exactly how you feel, I had a Newfoundland for 12 years (old for the breed) who I lost a month ago yesterday, but although she was old, and we all knew it, it was such a shock to us all. I'd been celebrating my birthday when I came home, my parents were out and something just felt wrong. I phoned them, they told me they were walking the dogs (I have another). I watched them coming up the street, with just one dog. I knew then. I'd lost my best friend and had no chance to say goodbye, but I knew, deep deep down - that putting her down was what they had to do, and what they needed to do.
Still to this day, I cry myself to sleep over her (+ my pet budgie + neighbours cat - we were close to him too, who have all been put down in the past month - bad month) even though I know it was the only option.
I have started to make a sketch-book of memories ready to take to uni with me - Including pictures of my old dog and my current dog just so I have them with me when I'm there.
I also bought a really cute necklace, it had two heart pendants - one 'You'll always be in my heart' and the other, slightly smaller with paw-prints on it. It's not got any personalisation or anything to do with my dog in it really, but in my head and heart - it is a connection to her, and I wear it all the time so she's always with me.

You just have to accept, that when your best friend does go, it was the right thing to do. You have to remember that he has had a long and clearly happy life (he just wouldn't have lived this long if he hadn't) and that he loves you just as much as you love him. Sometimes putting a pet out of misery is what they need, the freedom from suffering is just sometimes what you have to do, as heartbreaking as it is.

    Hes been put to sleep.

In the end he had something similar to a stroke, kept falling over, wasnt eating my family had to carry him out in his bed to go to the toilet because he couldnt get up.

They buried him in the garden, said a prayer and my nephew played the recorded but not too loudly ''in case it wakes him up''. He was a lovely dog. The best.

I'm really sorry, loosing a pet that you're close too is horrible.
My Dog (14), Rabbit (7) and Cat (13) are all at ages where they will probably die whilst I'm away at Uni.
People often think I'm cold because I don't get upset when pets die. But in my mind I know that I've given all of my pets the absolute best life they could possibly live and that gives me a great peace of mind.

    Sorry for your loss.

My dog is coming up for 12 this year and still acts like a puppy, he's never had to go to the vet or had any problems at all. I am expecting he will live for a good few years yet. (King Charles Cavalier).

Again, sorry for your loss. Dogs are family, I couldn't bare the thought of losing my Ben.

Give him all the love you can as much as you can when you see him.
I lost my cat during an operation and I was absolutely heartbroken because I didn't get to say goodbye. This was in 2009 and I still get choked up about it because I had him since I was 2 years old.
When the time comes for your dog to be laid to rest you will know that he is going to a better place away from the pain he must suffer every day. It is going to be very hard, I'm not going to lie and say it's not, but by cherishing the memories, photos and videos you have of him and thinking about the wonderful times you spent together it helps.
You could make a scrapbook, I did this when my cat died and it is lovely to have all those memories together. He got buried in my garden and we planted a plant in the garden to commemorate his wonderful life.
I also had a beautiful picture of him framed and this is something you could do with a picture of your dog.

:') You'll never forget him, that's for certain.
