Re: Do we take the Daily Mail too seriously?(Original post by Mendeleev's Table)
So, how do you react to the two posts below?
so why focus on the mail when all of the tabloids employ the same tactics and make the same mistakes?
the mail obsession thing is bizarre. its a perfect example of a meme -- monkey see, monkey do. -
Re: Do we take the Daily Mail too seriously?Because the thread asked about the Mail...I would probably say the same thing about the Sun, but I don't think I have read a full article there in months.(Original post by lulubel)

And in all honesty, do many people take The Sun seriously? -
Re: Do we take the Daily Mail too seriously?
I would beg to differ with the statement that all of the tabloids operate in the same or similar way.
The Daily Mail is the only one that displays outright racism.
I find the Sun and the Mirror a good laugh; the Dail Mail, on the other hand, just annoys me with some of the drivel and myths it writes about immigrants, Muslims etc. -
Re: Do we take the Daily Mail too seriously?
The Guardian is the left's equivalent of the DM, only packaged in a more respectable manner.
The Guardian is just as ludicrous on some issues, just as hyperbolic and just as inaccurate.
For the perceived anti-immigrant stance of the DM, see the Guardian's stance towards America, Israel and Jews. They recently had to apologise because their journalists strayed into anti-Semitism during their regular daily anti-Israel bashing.
So I don't mind people running down the DM, it's just that we usually find it's left wingers who at the same time claim the Guardian to be a quality newspaper and trusted news source. Neither of which are true. -
Re: Do we take the Daily Mail too seriously?A common problem is people who dislike Israel's way of doing things (which I would say is a lot of people) cannot express their reasonable criticism of Israel without being labelled anti-Semitic.(Original post by Chindits)

I come from a Jewish family but think Israel has done absolutely disgusting things to its neighbours. Just like we should be able to criticise Saudi Arabia's appalling record without being labelled Islamophobic, we should be allowed to criticise Israel's appalling behaviour without having to fear being called anti-Semitic.
Most criticism of Israel is nothing to do with Judaism, it's just with how its government and past governments have done things. -
Re: Do we take the Daily Mail too seriously?
I hate looking at the bigotry in the comment section on the mail online which is why I try and avoid it. They have done few good things in their history, their naming of the Stephen Lawrence murders for example, and they were very lucky to get a good web designer who made the website really accessible and easy to navigate. I just don't like what it represents a lot of the time.
You're right though it shouldn't be taken to seriously if the daily mail was a person it'd be a stereotypical screaming housewife who has nothing better to do then to moan about 'the gays', ethnic minorities, people on benefits and things that maybe slightly sort of confuse her sheltered children.
Still, they can at least live peacefully with the knowledge they're not a bigger joke than 'The Sun'. -

outright racism? lol
evidence? actual examples of blatant racism -- you should be able to find loads if all the chinese whispers about the mail are to be believed.
or are you just parroting trendy hearsay? -
Re: Do we take the Daily Mail too seriously? The Guardian has Charlie Brooker as a columnist that alone automatically makes it better than every other newspaper.(Original post by Chindits)

Re: Do we take the Daily Mail too seriously? That list is hilarious! Imagine what life would be like if we all avoided everything on that list(Original post by KJane)
I don't think it should be taken seriously. I've read some shocking articles on there. Including one where Liz Jones basically labelled women who didn't want children as liars and that their men shouldn't trust them if they say so.
And here's a list of things that the Daily mail claim will give you cancer:

It's not uncommon to read through an article and see they got facts wrong, showing shoddy research behind the whole piece. Confusing people for others, even spelling mistakes.
