I did question too thought it was ok, chose it because I had too much to say for the other one I knew I wouldn't have a proper argument and structure. I had 2 different critical viewpoints (which is all we need apparently as long as they are done in some detail) did marxist and gothic. Comparative texts Dracula, Dr Jekyll and Faust (though this I know i should have said more on) Said about the detail of the aristocracy vs the ambiguity of when he goes to the opium den except the last time he goes to the den where there is as much detail given as the start. Also looked at Basil vs Dorian -- we see his art studio just once and although it is wealthy we gain an understanding of the different level of wealth we see 4/5 Dorian's rooms but just 1 Basil's. Also mentioned Vane household - they had just one armchair this linked into my marxist PoV because James has a hatred for gentlemen. I had Thomas as my poet and managed to spend an hr on each Think my answer was ok but its a case of the more I think about it the more I could have said. :/ and I'm sure your answer is a lot better than you think!!
Oh thankgodyouve really reassured me so thanks so much!!!! Yeah I was literally the only one in my class who picked this silly question so fingers crossed it works well as the examiner will be so bored by the time they finish the others that they instantly award us full marks hahaha wow that's good you included the sibyl vane thing!!! I always panic in exams but I think I wrte that in my plan so hopefully get some credit for that!!! Yeah I kinda just analysed language and how different more elaborate language is used to describe the aristocracy... I used Marxism and some actual quotations from critics umm John drew and France's gray I think?? Hmm I've flopped all the ones after so now come to think of it English wasn't even too bad!!!! Thanks

I had something from Terry Eagleton for Marxist. Think plans do count and I'm sure you'll have a pleasant surprise in August. I got French tomorrow and dreading it -- it really will be an epic fail :/

Dunno about the other one but Browning was something like what character the monologist expresses in Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister or something! So like what type of character we see from the speaker using language structure and form blah blah..

    Hi everyone!

So, basically I just completed my A-levels and got a B in the AS english literature and an A for the A2.

I'm on a gap year now and privately retaking the AS exam for English literature on the new set texts. Im going to be teaching myself everything and need some help deciding the texts I want to study.

I know I want to do The Picture of Dorian Gray as my novel but need some help deciding with the poetry section.

I was thinking Yeats or Emily Dickinson but any recommendations would be truly appreciated.

I would like something not overly-challenging as I wont have all the extra help from teachers etc so please suggest accordingly to my situation.

I hope to get some replies any advice will be valued.

Thanks everyone and good luckk with A2 English!

I studied Emily Dickinson. Thought her poems were great. They are very simply written in style, however the themes of the poems often relate to the big, philosophical and metaphysical concepts. I really enjoyed learning her poetry and I really recommend it. Plus the York notes guide for Dickinson is extremely useful when it comes to revising, learning technical poetic vocab as well as prompting you to come up with your own ideas.
