Essex has a better reputation, Brunel is where a lot of CCC/CDD candidates go, in my experience anyway.

Go for Essex. Brunel has a shoddy reputation. I know someone who did a computational finance degree there and has been unemployed for a year, and so have her friends.
Essex is the safer option. -
