Depressing film to make me cry? :)

Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

Mighty Joe Young. I cannot physically watch that film without crying. Even though I know what happens.

EDIT: Actually, not depressing per se, just sad. So ignore me :p:

    Nil By Mouth
    The War Zone
    Tyrannosaur
    Fish Tank
    Naked

I don't think anyone mentioned any of these. You should all be ashamed. No country does gritty, depressing drama like the UK.

As so many people have mentioned Requiem for a Dream I feel I should add Leaving Las Vegas. Nicolas Cage's best performance, and one of the best of an alcoholic I've seen in any film.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley is quite depressing, more so because it's based upon actual events (that continue to have repercussions to this day), and it's the best Irish film I can think of.

Saw Million Dollar Baby again the other day for the first time since its release. It's quite sad I guess, but kinda uplifting too.

Has to be Seven Pounds. I don't know anyone that has watched this film all the way through without crying.

    Seven pounds!

I think this film is really underrated and it's definitely one of the best that Will Smith has done.

    Harrelson's character is great too.

I was uncontrollable in The Boy in Striped Pyjamas. I thought I was fine all the way through and then it hit me at the end.

I have to agree with you on these:

    Armageddon
    Lion King (the first one)
    Gladiator
    Remember Me
    Marley and Me
    LOTR: Return of the King

**LOTR: Return of King was the first of the LOTR film I watched at the time. I got on a date with my brother and sister; we were late to buy the tickets so we had the front row seat and the screen was up our heads and breaking our necks! Yet I cried when Frodo and Sam was nearly at the brink of death! haha

Also these made me cry too:

Hachiko (I was shocked that an animal like him actually existed! Cry throughout!)
    A Walk to Remember
The Object of My Affection (I guess I was jealous that he was gay but he was suited for her. how unfair.)
    PS I Love You
    Titanic
City of Angels (I hated the last part where he said to one of his friends something like it was all (him being an angel then become human and she died in the end) worth it.
Mann (a hindi film based on an American one-granted, it was a cliche but I still cried. Damn songs have very deep meaning.)

I still have some on my list but I don't remember the names. songs make me cry too. and manga. and anime.
Gah i can't even remember all the sad scenes in manga and anime i've seen or read

I cry at all films, but here are some hilites:

    A Beautiful Mind
    Butterfly's Tongue (at the end)
    Leon (halfway through onwards)
The Lovely Bones (all the freakin' way through)
    Seven Pounds (Christ)

Many others that have been said, The Green Mile and such...

I remember Romeo x Juliet! It was depressing and sad, I cried whenever I heard the song "You raise me up" ever since. Even though it had a weird setting, I loved this version of Romeo and Juliet. They're both depicted as strong willed characters and still romantic to one another!

Also, Bokura Ga Ita... That's depressive and sad too!

I'm just corny. Any shoujo/anime can make me swell.

It's interesting to experience stories regardless of the overall positive or negative feel you're left with. There's nothing wrong with wanting to explore different emotions or vent your own emotions through books or films. If anything it's much healthier than ignoring a delicate mental state or going through life actively avoiding real feelings.

    You're being narrow-minded.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Cried for about half an hour after the film was over.

Atonement. My exact thoughts were: THIS IS NOT HOW I WANTED THINGS TO GO.

Cried like a baby after watching 50/50, although my girlfriend did not
    Still a terrific film
Oh my; I watched that with my girlfriend as we didn't have any other preferences on what to watch, made me feel all :cry2: - Really dislike negative films but it was good.

I'll recommend Stroszek, the film Ian Curtis watched before he killed himself.

Lost and Delirious. The end kills.

Plus A Very Long Engagement- the end also kills, but although it's wonderful it also makes you realise that you'll probably never be embroiled in a romance so epic and heart wrenching.

Moulin Rouge.. the ending always has me in tears

City of angels and the notebook are also romantic ones that make me cry and then there's saving private ryan, artificial intelligence and I-Robot. It's impossible not to cry in those.

EDIT: Green mile! can't believe I forgot that one! and a film called millions. The Pianist makes me cry too. I havn't seen it but Angela's Ashes is supposed to be a really depressing film. I recently saw a film called martyrs which was deeply depressing but in a scary way.. It didn't make me cry.. just sort of made me feel 'urgh...' I'm not sure if that's quite what you're going for lol And now I'm going to bed before I think of any more!!!

Definitely agree with you on seven pounds! Same with 'the persuit of happyness' I think I was too busy criticising the lovely bones in comparison to the book to get really emotional... The butterfly effect 2!
