Re: Best ever British footballer?
From what I've seen in my lifetime, Shearer. Not only in his Newcastle career where he became famous for scoring headed goals, but before his injuries in the late 90's he was pretty much the perfect striker: fast, could head the ball, great finisher, very good positioning, underrated passer of the ball. After his big injuries, he had to adapt his game to be more of a target man (despite just being six foot) and was still successful. When he was at Blackburn, there weren't many better strikers.
There's others like Scholes, Adams, Gazza that were all phenomenal too. -

George Best wasn't British.
OP: from my lifetime, Paul Scholes -

George Best wasn't British.
He was the greatest, though. He was like Cristiano Ronaldo after a bottle of gin and a night at the casino - but still able to stagger on to the pitch and produce something that no-one had seen before. -

Britain is the term used for the island containing the contiguous nations of England, Scotland and Wales.(Original post by Clip)
Sorry. I missed the bit where Northern Ireland wasn't part of Britain.

Has to be Best.
Nobody could touch him, let alone get the ball off him, in that era.
I was there at Upton Park, the first United match since George Best passed away
My father managed to watch him play in front of his very own eyes, and he shed a few tears during the minutes applause.
What a man.
