Kent or Glasgow university?
Need to choose between the two... both such extreme opposites. The course is Comparative Literature & Film Studies. Can't decide!
Kent is rather close to home and is situated in the rather small city of Canterbury, which isn't MUCH to my taste, however I adore the lecturers and the actual course. Glasgow, however, is a bit more traditional which may take some getting used to, and I'm not as familiar to the course content as I am with Kent's... however it is located in a big city with many more opportunities.. for example I am able to do a year abroad. Also, at Glasgow I can do 4 subjects during my 1st & 2nd year whilst at Kent I must stick to what I've chosen... the Glasgow flexibility suits me more. I got a great feeling both times I visited Kent but for some reason I don't want to like it, and wish I liked Glasgow more! Can anyone give some wise words or opinions? Deadline is approaching rather quickly!
Greatly appreciated... -
Re: Kent or Glasgow university?Kent is pretty big on years abroad, I'm surprised you are not able to do one. They model themselves as 'The International University':(Original post by looneylamb)

Depends on your point of view and what opportunities you are looking for. You definitely won't get bored in Canterbury, between the city and the university there's always plenty going on. However, there are some things in Glasgow that simply don't exist in Canterbury.... however it is located in a big city with many more opportunities..
What is it that appeals to you about the city of Glasgow? -
Re: Kent or Glasgow university?Well, I'm a city girl really I suppose. I love knowing that I can wander somewhere and discover somewhere new. Both times I visited Glasgow, I felt a great sense of freedom and I loved that about it.(Original post by Mbob)

I'm not able to do a year abroad from Kent as I am doing a joint honours and they don't offer them for this type of degree.
Someone told me recently about how over 70% of people were rejected from Glasgow this year and that normally the entry grades are AAA rather than ABB. made me feel a lot more privileged to have an offer from then.
Kent is a brilliant place but unfortunately I think location is also a huge factor for me and Glasgow can provide for both
.

Re: Kent or Glasgow university?Yeah I think I'm heading that way(Original post by Tom_Sg)
Go to Glasgow, kent uni is really ugly, old buildings from 60' ...
The city is really lovely, but to live here you have nothing to do.
Go for Glasgow
. You live in Canterbury?

Re: Kent or Glasgow university? So many mixed feelings on that place!(Original post by Tom_Sg)
I do too.
It's terrible i'll swap my course and uni for sept 2012, im heading to Southampton ;-)
What subject are you doing? How come you dislike it so much? -
Re: Kent or Glasgow university?Have you seen the Boyd Orr building and the maths building?(Original post by Tom_Sg)

It depends on what factor is more important for you, the course or the social aspects of student life. You should try and find out more about the course at Glasgow, then you might be able to better judge which of the two you prefer.
You don't want to be in a situation where you hate the course, or conversely are bored with the city. You want to get the best of both.
Glasgow clearly wins if you're a city person and want to have lots to do, there's a club for pretty much everything at the uni not to mention 2 unions on campus, thousands of pubs, clubs, shops and places to go.
Does the way the course is taught really matter to you that much? Surely you'll enjoy it anyway if the subject fascinates you. The flexibility at Glasgow appeals to me too. -
Re: Kent or Glasgow university?I've looked thoroughly into Glasgow now. I was waiting on one of the students there to reply to my emails so that she could answer a few questions, and she helped clarify a few things. Yeah, I do love the course structure that allows such flexibility. I didn't quite understand how it worked when I posted this but I think now that I've spoken to such a wide range of people, I can make the safe choice to go with Glasgow. I almost feel like emailing Kent and apologising that I've technically broken up with them. ^_^(Original post by Sniggey)

Thanks for the help everyone... it's greatly appreciated. -
Re: Kent or Glasgow university?Go for Kent. The Scottish 4 year MA is equivalent to England's 3 year BA. It's not actually a 'masters' degree as such. You should choose Kent and save yourself 9K on a year's tuition and 3K worth of accommodation on a year which you don't need. Besides, Kent is nicer. Glasgow is all rainy, cold and miserably, and has higher crime and drug rates.(Original post by looneylamb)

Re: Kent or Glasgow university?Glasgow is £6750 per year for me, which means that the actual degrees are the same price. I do have to pay for another year of accommodation but I'm sure I can cross that bridge when I get to it.(Original post by Captain Hindsight)

I actually enjoy rain a lot more than I enjoy no rain, so I guess that isn't an issue for me. As for the crimes and drug problems, I know what you're talking about but I trust that the university is in a safer part of it as I haven't heard of any problems actually IN the university.
Thanks, though. -

The worst crime at Glasgow uni is someone dumping their wardrobe on computers to reserve them.
Glasgow is a big place and as a student you will exclusively spend time in the west end "posh bit" and the city centre, both areas which are as safe as anywhere else in the country.Last edited by G8D; 01-05-2012 at 21:01.
I'd say learn more about the course at Glasgow, and come visit. Only then will you be able to make a fully informed decision
