The role is to provide additional energy to enable muscle contraction to occur for a longer period of time. The sarcoplasm in the muscle cell contains the phosphocreatine which can transfer its phosphoryl group to ADP to form ATP through the action of creatine phosphotransferase (an enzyme). This process is very quick and can allow muscle contraction to occur for 2-4 more seconds than would be able to otherwise.
