Re: AbortionThe current legal abortion limit is 24 weeks. Babies born at 24 weeks (or even earlier) can survive. The chances are low obviously, around 5% for 24 weeks I think, but still makes you consider whether abortion at that age should be legal if the embryo/child at this age is capable of living outside of the whomb.(Original post by No Man)
I see no problem as long as it is done before it has reached a certain stage in development. The limit they have in place currently seems fair imo.
Personally I think it should be lowered to around 20 weeks gestation. -
Re: Abortion
i agree with it. some people are not mentally or financially prepared to raise a child and they should not ruin their lives and their baby's life because of society's misconceptions. i just think it should be done as early as possible and i don't understand women who wait until they are like 6 months pregnant to decide to have an abortion. i mean, why wait that long?

Re: Abortion
Personally, I could never condone it.
I think our society needs to remain pro-choice for all the obvious reasons that will be covered in detail within this thread.
There was a recent thread discussing the morality of aborting because a fetus was identified as schizophrenic prone. The sentiment was almost unanimous that to do so would be wrong or immoral. I find it hypocritical that that so many believe, "I don't want to be a parent", is an acceptable justification but "The child will suffer a severe mental condition", is not.Last edited by ckingalt; 30-04-2012 at 00:24. -
Re: Abortion
I see no problem with it providing it is done for the right reasons. I agree with it if having a child would have an impact on the mother's mental or physical well-being, in cases of rape or if she simply wasn't in a position to be able to take care of a child. Of course there is adoption but I don't like the idea of bringing an unwanted child into the world only for them to end up in care. There are too many people on this planet as it is, we barely have enough food to feed everyone that is already here. I've had a pregnancy scare before, a few months before I was due to take my A-levels. I would have had to choose abortion had I been pregnant, no other option would have been suitable. I don't think anyone should be punished by being forced to have a child simply because they either made a mistake or their birth control failed.
As for lowering the time limit I'm not sure, though I think 20 weeks is a good amount of time to make your mind up. -
Re: Abortion
I'm pro choice. My body, my choice. In reality i don't know if i could go through with an abortion but i'd want the right to make the decision myself. I also agree that the abortion 'window' should be lowered. My cousin was born at 23 weeks, he's 19 now and perfectly healthy. But a fetus can be aborted up till 24 weeks...
Using protection is obviously the prefered choice, but accidents happen. -
Re: Abortion
I don't have a problem with abortions (as long as done as early as possible), as many people may not be ready to have kids...
however when it is used as a frequent birth control method, instead of the pill for example, or due knowing that the baby has a medical condition eg downs sydrome is horrible!!! -
Re: Abortion
Current limit far too high in my opinion, for the reasons Elwyn gave above.
I think it's a good thing that women should have the choice, but at the same time I think the number of abortions that actually happen is shocking. I think it should be a decision that is made when there is really no way that the baby could be dealt with after it is born, and at the moment, we are at risk of abortion being something far too common and casual in society. We musn't forget the fundamental process and morality behind what is being done to the foetus, despite all of the pro-choice arguments we can retaliate with. -

Re: AbortionA 1-5% chance is often considered okay in most cases, depending on the exact situation. In psychology if there is a 5% chance (or less) results could occur by chance, you say it didn't occur by chance and occurred due to the experimental variable. Things like clinical trials tend to be 1%(Original post by Elwyn)
The current legal abortion limit is 24 weeks. Babies born at 24 weeks (or even earlier) can survive. Personally I think it should be lowered to around 20 weeks gestation.
I think if more than 5% of embryos survive past a certain point, this should be the cut off.
I am both pro-choice and pro-life and don't understand why you can't be both. A woman who is having multiple abortions instead of using protection should have to attend a compulsory appointment with a family planning clinic and not allowed to leave until she has some form of contraception. However, if a woman can convince two doctors that she should have an abortion, we should trust the judgement of the doctors! -
Re: Abortion
I do believe in abortion, however I don't think there is any excuse for using it as a form of contraception.
A girl my sister knows has had three abortions in the past year because she can't be bothered to use any type of contraception. She's now pregnant and is deciding whether to keep it or not. She's 16. This girl had other kids in her class buying her condoms and asking her to use them in future. I realise I'm going slightly off topic but my point is that I believe abortions should be legal, but when people abuse it, there's a problem.
This was worded really badly, I'm tired. But I've tried to explain it as well as I can.
Edit: Why was I negged for this? Sod it. I don't even care.Last edited by JessyPhil; 04-05-2012 at 00:00.
