Re: Who here uses credit cards these days? How did you get both of those as a student in the UK? I have found it impossible to get one
I do have an AMEX from the US though.
Anyway I have the following:
American Express Starwood Preferred Guest - use it only when I am in the US.
HSBC Student Credit Card - Now my day to day card in the UK.
Société Générale - Only use in Eurozone.
Swiss Miles & More Kreditkarte (AMEX and Visa) - Use it only when I am booking flights and in Switzerland. -
Re: Who here uses credit cards these days?
I don't trust myself with a credit card. I have a debit card so I can buy things online and withdraw cash and things, but I feel like if I got a credit card, I would go mad and then not be able to pay the bills. I don't want to spend money I don't have. Only using a debit card means I only spend what I have, but a few friends of mine have credit cards and I think it's fine for them =]

Re: Who here uses credit cards these days?Im not entirely sure to be quite honest with you ... i think its because im self employed on top of the student status so politely chose the former and didnt mention being a student on the form(Original post by tehFrance)

Re: Who here uses credit cards these days?aye i know what you mean with the credit cards it does require a lot of self control to use them, i have some family friends who went a bit off the rails with them using one to pay off another and so on so forth ... eventually ended up loosing the house the car everything and having to declare bankruptsy, can be dangerous thing to be honest, hence why i tend to use the charge card more .. less chance of building up a huge rolling debt(Original post by JessyPhil)

Re: Who here uses credit cards these days?Haha yeah that's a pretty extreme case and I'm sure for 99% of people credit cards are absolutely fine. But I'm 19 and a bit of an idiot. I think they come with like a £5000 limit or something? So I'd probably spend it all on driving lessons, driving test, a ****load of clothes and various other crap that I would regret and not be able to afford.(Original post by cl_steele)

Re: Who here uses credit cards these days?I have not declared I am a student either, I have a good job and an excellent credit rating here so I don't understand it as the HSBC Student Credit Card is a load of BS, the repayment terms are good but the interest is(Original post by cl_steele)

yeh it was strange, i banked with RBS for about 6 years but they declined me for a basic credit card yet less than a week later AMEX accepted me and from what ive heard theyre notorious for declining people but hey ho cant argue

Yeah I honestly don't get it unless it is due to overall household income being lower than they would like (as it is just my job now that brings in the money to the place as it is just me

Re: Who here uses credit cards these days?
I have the following charge and credit cards :-
i) HSBC Premier Visa(UK) - I use this one mostly for web shopping only these days and only when the merchant in question won't export it out of UK.
ii) HSBC Platinum Visa(Hong Kong) - I use this when I go back to Hong Kong or if I travel in Asia.
iii) Bank of America Business Platinum MasterCard (USA) - I only use this to buy stuff off Amazon or any US websites and then have it delivered to my uncle's house in US.
v) AMEX Centurion , is a supplementary card from my dad issued in Hong Kong.... I rarely ever use it unless I am at a place that I'm dissatisfied with their service and they so happen to accept AMEX.... the reason this is so and also the reason why many merchants refuse to accept AMEX is because unlike Visa or MC which charges between 1-3% as transaction fees, AMEX charges around 5%
vi) UBS Platinum Visa (Switzerland) - this is my everyday card and I use it for just about anything that cost more than CHF50
Any electronic payment is always done on a credit card.... prefer it that way for safety reasons as if there is a fraud the bank will deal with it where else if it is a fraud on your debit card account the banks don't give a crap about it normally as the way they view it is it isn't their money that got defrauded.
The only time I use my debit card is to use the ATM machines

Re: Who here uses credit cards these days?I've looked through a few of your posts and almost every post you make is a different way of boasting about your affluence. Do you lack friends to boast with, or are they just uninterested? What makes you think people here want to hear about it?(Original post by cl_steele)

TBH your list of credit cards just says "sucker", esp. Amex, who are notorious for fleecing their much-loved "customers". -
Re: Who here uses credit cards these days? You must be rolling in it. Hadn't heard about these before a professional skiier called Jon Olsson talked about it in his blog, he earns millions and said it was difficult for him to get ...Fair play!(Original post by Herr)

Re: Who here uses credit cards these days? It's quite difficult to find smaller shops who would take an AMEX indeed... especially in UK.(Original post by cl_steele)
very nice, i've never come across one of those things from what i hear theyre a diamond dozen and you can only get offered one? props to you! only problem ive ever found with AMEX is a fair few of the local shops around my area dont take the damn thing due to the higher fees :/
The Centurion card is by invitation only, you need to have had an AMEX Platinum member for 5 years at bare minimum before they would invite you, on condition you charge in the high 9 digits in HK$, not sure how much exactly as it is my dad's card I'm just scrounging off him for the glamour of having one LOL.... supposedly the annual fee is quite expensive too so if he flies anywhere then he would definitely buy his tickets on that card as you buy 1 business class ticket you will get a free upgrade to 1st or if you buy a 1st class you can get either 1 or 2 more tickets for free.
There is another even rarer card out there these days, it's called a JP Morgan Palladium VISA. It is only given out to their own private bank clients or in some rare cases through one of their partner institutions. But you need US$30m in investments with these institutions as a private bank client.... supposedly less than 300 in circulation. Heh.... don't think I'll be getting a supplementary of this one any time soon. -
Re: Who here uses credit cards these days?Like Herr said this card is buy invitation only so I highly doubt we'll be getting invites any time soon... it is like the Harrods Rewards from AMEX, invitation only (although I swear I should qualify by now as I am in the Gold Tier)... I guess AMEX just hate me in this country(Original post by cl_steele)
very nice, i've never come across one of those things from what i hear theyre a diamond dozen and you can only get offered one?
But yeah the AMEX Centurion is for the best of the best... aka Billionaires. -
Re: Who here uses credit cards these days?
I have one with a £500 limit, which I use for online purchases. I don't think it has ever left the house. I don't think credit cards are inherently bad, it depends on how you use them. I suppose if you have weak self control it's best to avoid them.
