Re: Whats it really like being a doctor/medical student?Yes I'm a chatterbox, I love people. General practice is great, really interesting and varied and you'd probably get to see him more haha.(Original post by HaNzY)
Sounds good
You are definitely a people person then
My bf is interested in the same kind of things as he also wants a nice work/life balance. He's airing on the side of general practice but is also quite interested in dermatology. He enjoys the surgery stuff quite a bit though, but isn't keen on how difficult it can be to get into the training (competitive) and the work/life balance etc.

Re: Whats it really like being a doctor/medical student?Lol aww, perfect job for you then! Yeah he says another main reason he wants to do GP is that he wants to be able to spend more time at home with our future kids(Original post by Sherbet)

(while still doing what he enjoys as a career and getting paid a lot) lol. That's the plan anyway

Re: Whats it really like being a doctor/medical student?
it really depends on what kind of doctor you wanna be. my dad is a doctor & says he had free time in school, i mean it takes over a decade to become a doctor & some times you won't have free time, but other times you;ll have days of free time. if you really want to be a doctor then i know you can do it!
my dad is a rheumotologist & all he does pretty much is give old people shots all day. he has alot of free time now, the only down side is that his patients die alot because they're old(like all from ww2!) lol -
Re: Whats it really like being a doctor/medical student? We're engaged...and I dunno what that means to you, but it means a lot to us.(Original post by RollerBall)

Re: Whats it really like being a doctor/medical student?
I don't think anyone is reading my posts. I didn't say he was planning his career around that. Just that it was one of the many factors in the equation. We are engaged and have been together a long time, why shouldn't we be having that as a factor??(Original post by digitalis)
Now that I am slightly drunk I cannot help but ROFL at the whole 'I'm planning my career choice based on our future kids' line...great line for a medic fresher night out
Just because you are a single, party animal medical student (which is what you make yourself sound like) doesn't mean to say everyone else is... -

But if I'm not mistaken, even GP training is gonna take 4 more years, and it might be difficult to find a post where both of you will be together - which you are no doubt, aware.
Perhaps Digitalis was just suggesting how it'd be difficult to balance that with kids and all. -
Re: Whats it really like being a doctor/medical student?Yes that's all fine, but I will probably be self employed so can move anywhere. I am talking about when he finishes GP training as the time when kids are on the cards, and I am quite certain he will have more free time as a GP than as a surgeon (or similar). As I say, for him, he says it's one of the many factors involved in choosing which route he wants to specialise in. And I'm glad he is taking that into consideration, he is being realistic as we are incredibly likely to have children in 10 years, so why not try to create an environment that is relatively suitable for that.(Original post by hslakaal)
Relax. It's just a forum.

And I am relaxed lol
