Please help, not sure!
Ok, It's not so much that I'm confused, but I need help/clarification with regards to turning right at traffic lights and a stream of traffic blocking your exit.
If, for example, you were waiting at a red light, in a right turning lane, to turn right after the lights, and the light went green, but there was traffic flowing on your right, preventing you from turning, I assume you would enter the junction, and wait for a safe gap in which to go and turn right, but if the light turned red whilst you were waiting, would you be in the wrong for being there, obviously you would have to go as you would be an obstruction, but my question is, say on a test, would that be a major for getting into that situation?
Are you required to wait at the stop line until a gap appears, or is what I described acceptable? -
Re: Please help, not sure!
I must admit I hit this problem on my test, only it was the biggest yellow box you've ever seen and I was stuck waiting in the middle of it to turn right. It was a really busy junction so when the lights went amber and the rest of the traffic stopped I just went for it. I ended up with a minor for undue hesitation because I took a couple of seconds to decide so I assume it was the right thing to do!
I'm still a bit unclear about it, I just tend to wing it from situation to situation. I've noticed that most lights have either a filter arrow or a delay so that your green light stays on for longer than the oncoming traffic. -
Re: Please help, not sure!
If I'm in the middle of a junction waiting to turn right, the second the traffic stops (regardless of whether the light I just passed through behind me is red) I turn right.
If you're still behind the 'Stop' line and the light turns red, then sit and wait for it to turn green again
If you sit there like a numpty in the middle of the junction you're just going to block the flow of traffic.Last edited by wibletg; 03-05-2012 at 19:36. -
Re: Please help, not sure!Who had to slow down?(Original post by ekudamram)
I did the first thing you said, but he failed me because apparently someone had to slow down. -
Re: Please help, not sure!
There was a stream of traffic blocking my exit, I saw a gap appear and I went through it. I went back to the test centre thinking I'd passed, but apparently a car had to slow down due to me crossing.
I didn't notice that, so I don't think it was too close a shave. I'd like to think he was harsh due to being examined himself by someone in the back, but oh well, next test is on my birthday! -
Re: Please help, not sure!
Waiting to turn right at lights and prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic you cross the stop line and wait as far forward as safely possible but make sure your wheels are not turned to the right because if they are and some numpty hits you up the rear then your car will go where the wheels are pointing - straight into the oncoming traffic!!!!!
Now you are over the stop line you have put yourself into a give way situation so when the oncoming traffic ceases you may turn right if safe to do so
