What is City South Accommodation really like?! - Health Students
    Hi
I'm trying to complete my accommodation application at the mo, starting Midwifery this Sep.

I can't find ANY photos or info as to what City South really looks like? Heard a few bad things.. Not expecting a 5* hotel or anything but I thought about opting for Jennens court or Opal as first choice as they look more decent & have an ensuite (not too keen on bathroom sharing).. yet these are over 3 miles away and the others are 4-7 miles away. Don't want to be travelling too much during my first year as I'm getting to know the area & i guess I'd like to be with other health students. Just don't want to be stuck in City South if it's that bad..

Anyone lived there or have any extra info?

    Thanks xo

    Hiya!
I will be doing midwivery and thinking exactly the same! On the website it said 1/2 bathrooms between 4/11! Plus from the outside it looks the worst.
Has anyone seen any rooms? X

I've firmed for diagnostic radiography. I mainly want to know how big the bedrooms are and how much storage there is haha. Also don't know whether it's worth applying for a bigger room at Calthorpe, although don't know if it's worth it as there isn't a double bed haha...

    Hi,
I went on a tour of the accommodation at BCU last year as I was applying for midwifery. I would advise trying to arrange going to an open day/accommodation tour if they have any soon, purely so you can look at the accommodation at City South. If not, maybe you could try and arrange with accommodation for a private tour to get shown round for 1/2 hour one afternoon or something. If they know you have an offer and showing you round could mean you live in their accommodation, therefore paying them rent, they are likely to be willing to show you round! I remember the City South accommodation very well. I believe it is Oakmount and Westmount that were the nicer ones and Calthorpe I wasn't so keen on.....I think. There is one that is a higher tower block and I was not as keen on that one. Oakmount and Westmount were both refurbished in 2010 I think they said and although they don't look fantastic on the outside, on the inside they were above average compared to other university halls across the country. When I say above average, I mean that they were really very nice, but obviously when you compare them to places like Opal, which aren't really typical for student accommodation because they are at the extreme end of nice student halls, of course they are only going to seem above average. Inside they felt peaceful, light and airy. There was a large common area with sofas, and coming from someone who is living in student halls elsewhere in the country where there is no common room, I imagine it would be nice to have that. I was also very impressed by the kitchens, having seen plenty of other kitchens in halls at other universities. It was clean and there was space to cook and there looked to be plenty of fridge, freezer and cupboard space for everyone. What I particularly liked was that there was a kitchen table and chairs, something rare in halls, and I felt this would be particularly nice for the social side of things as you can often end up sat in your room eating your food. I also liked that they were very aware of the fact that the halls on City South needed to be a bit different because they are mainly for nursing/midwifery/professional course students, so just simple things like providing more ironing boards than they usually would because they know students have uniforms to iron was nice. Unfortunately we didn't see the bedrooms up close because they had students studying for exams in them, but they seemed nice. I don't really remember much about the bathrooms, but I don't remember being horrified and I remember thinking they were good for shared bathrooms.

I would really advise living in City South accommodation for 2 main reasons. Firstly, it's really good to be so close to lectures and the library and facilities. It might not seem like a big deal, and I didn't think it would be an issue for me to travel into uni each day from halls that were further away, but I'm living on campus where I am and it's really good not to have to worry about getting to lectures, and being able to go to the library whenever I want and not worrying about how to get back if it's dark etc. Also, it's best to live with other nursing and midwifery students. I was really against this when I first started looking at halls, but where I am I ended up in the supposedly quiet block, but with people from all sorts of courses where they only went in 3 hours a week and I ended up having to move at Christmas because the amount of noise all through the night was ridiculous. Plus they didn't like me because they thought I was really unsociable, but they didn't seem to realise that actually I wasn't even there because I was on placement all day every day. So I would advise living with other nursing/midwifery students and you're more likely to get this staying in City South.

I realise this was very long, but I hope it's helped!

I had the ID from the email they sent after I applied through UCAS so it's all sorted now, but thank you very much for replying, it's nice to have the number if I need it!

Hello! I'm doing Midwifery in Sept. and am applying for City South halls. Does anyone know how to specify whether you'd like Oakmount, Calthorpe or Westmount on the online application form? Ahh this is so confusing! x

I also applied for City South. You can't specify which halls you want, but there is an additional info section at the end, where you can type whatever you want, so I suppose you could state your preference in there, wish I had done that, although I got my room offer today and it's Westmount which is the one I wanted anyway so I'm happy

Hi I've just received an offer for speech therapy at bcu. I was wondering how you found city south accommodation? Is the bathroom situation better than expected? (as that's my main concern) also is it common for people who are studyin at the south campus to live elsewhere like opal? Someone please reply! Xxx

i am currently living in calthorpe hall at city south, when i was applying i struggled to get any information for the halls. Calthorpe looks horrible from the outside but once your inside the rooms are a really good size, theres 10 people to a flat you get 2 showers 2 toilets and a bath. The only problem is that the kitchen area is not big enough for 10 people to be cooking and there are no sofas or sort of living area you only have a dining area but bedrooms are large enough to fit a few of your flat mates in. Oakmount i think is 4 to a flat there nicer because they have been done up but there bedrooms are smaller and the rent is more. Westmount is 10 to a flat aswell i think they are nicer too but again rooms are smaller. It depends what your looking for, if you want a large room for cheap go with calthorpe but if you prefer nicer kitchens an that go with westmount or oakmount. Also if you like going out alot i wouldnt really advice city south accommodation as its not very lively but also that depends on who you live with, Majority are girls as its a health campus.
