I took me exactly one year to lose 105lbs. Then I plateaued and did lose anything till mid Jan. Then since mid Jan I have lost another 5lbs.

Secondly, what sort of weight did you get to before you started lifting? Currently I'm 136lbs and I'm 5'7'' so I'm slim but there is still abit of fat on me, personally. I'm just concerned that if I start lifting seriously now that I'll look chunky because of the layer of fat that still needs to go. So at the moment I'm just trying to lose weight and then once I'm about 126lbs I'll start lifting. Would you say that's a good thing to do, or should I just lift and lose weight at the same time? I want a similar physique to the 4th pic in your original post. -

I have always lifted quite heavy since I started losing weight but took it more seriously when I got under the 14st mark (however I wasn't doing things like deadlifts and squats). As you are losing body fat you should be looking more chunky rather what will happen is that your muscles will become more and more visible and you will still lose inches all over (although proportions might change a tiny weeny bit) -

You hit it right on the nail there. Ok for example I was 18st 8lbs (at 5ft 10lb) and my body was a mess. My mum's side of the family is really overweight as well. At one point I thought I was going to be fat and there was no way I could ever imagine my body being the way it is now.
However with a decent diet (and sometimes I still eat a bit of junk
) and exercise both cardio and weights I managed to not only lose the weight but to transform my body and get my body looking the way does now (In fact i have a 4 pack and my tummy use to be flabby and huge).
Moral of the story is that anyone can get a decent body with a good diet and exercise. If I am a woman and could look like this then I don't see why a man can't gain decent muscle and look good (naturally)

That's a myth perpetuated by the huge and lucrative sports/fitness/nutrition industry. They want us to believe that anyone can do it if only we try hard. And buy all their ****. Obviously 99% of people fail at their fitness or sporting pursuits - so common that it's the subject of jokes and parody - and we're encouraged to slight their character (they didn't apply themselves) rather than wonder whether it was actually ever possible for them or if they'd been sold impossible dreams. The ideal analogy would be academic achievement. Work hard and you can get dem grades, right? Hah, not a chance. The smart kids get top grades, the thick ones get **** grades. Some people creep a few steps up the ladder with very clever (not necessarily hard) work, and some slip further back or spin their wheels by pushing too hard, swimming against the current and going under.
They can do.
It could be beneficial in a different social context to how we place it today. Exercise is important, but only in certain ways and with certain approaches to it, and also from a young age, importantly. The way weightlifting/BBing is presented to men today is an absolute joke (yes, even the stuff that you all think is totally 100% legit fo real this time) and damages people physically and psychologically.
Generally speaking, I think that it is important to believe that we are the masters of our own fate and that what we achieve in life is largely a product of our own actions. I don't think that anyone can achieve anything worthwhile if they believe that only the naturally gifted can achieve. I am not just talking about exercise and fitness here as I feel that this applies to absolutely anything.

I don't find that sort of thing to be motivational of meaningful. I know a lot of people do, though. It sends a lot of people to their doom but a chosen few actually make it. If we think that human "progress" as we see it today is a good thing then so are hollow, meaningless motivational forces that help the able minority (in a given field) find themselves.I am not just talking about exercise and fitness here as I feel that this applies to absolutely anything.

I see training/practice to work on the group level, rather than the individual level. Much more than improving any given individual in the group, it selects the best individuals from that group and lets the others fall away, hopefully to find success elsewhere. What's your routine/diet like? Do you have a blog or anything? I'd be interested to read it if so.
With regards to diet I counted calories. I aim to eat about 1g of protein per 1lb of body weight, 0.5g of fat per 1lb of body weight and the rest in carbs. With regards to cardio I usually do a combination of running and the stepper.
With regards to weights I do deadlifts, squats, bench press, pull ups, chin ups. Sometimes I might also do shoulder press, calve raises, tricep extensions, bicep curls, barbell rows, upright rows, stiff legged deadlift -

Whether you put on or lose weight (and thus whether you look 'bulky') depends entirely on diet (calories in vs out).
If any woman can accidently get 'bulky' from lifting weights I would like to know her secret because putting on muscle weight is not easy.
Also, as a guy, I have to say that a girl lifting heavy is a huge turn on (as long as she's not stronger than me). I see so many overly skinny girls around these days and I find it repulsive.Last edited by el.cheese; 01-05-2012 at 22:26. -

Tbf as well OP you have black genetics meaning you will put on muscle easier than the cracker ass TSR females which is about 90%...plus darker skin makes you look more ripped and in your relaxed pic you look just normal...so basically most TSR girls never need to worry about getting too bulky.

TSR needs shorter gaps for repping the same people.
And tbh women would need steroids to look bulky. I'm even skeptical over some of the fitness models in some pics. They don't necessarily look as big as the example you posted but they look way too lean to be natural.

TSR is full of young guys who joined a gym two months ago and are keen to promote their new hobby by parroting fiction and lies about what it does and doesn't do to the average person. It's to convince themselves as much as anything.
At least, though, men's idols do in fact lift weights. It's not the primary cause of their physique being how it is, but it's relevant. Girls, though, are pointed to examples of women who don't even lift weights or likely do much exercise at all, and who happen to have pretty good bodies, and then the wild claim is made that if they go and do [whatever routine TSR likes this week] they, too, will look like that random famous skank.

If you do think that the last two pics i posted is too much for you then lifting very heavy may not be for you. As much as its very painful for me to say this you may just want to stick with the cardio and do medium weights (not too light but not too heavy as well).(Original post by GdotL)
Can't really think of a celebrity - I just mean no visible muscle definition with soft thighs etc. Would it be skinnyfat?
I've actually had a few people say this to me as well. I think that my genetics (plus very low bodyfat as well) played a huge part in how I looked as I made very good progress even though I'm on a calorie deficit (in fact I was shocked at how much progress I made) and my diet isn't the best either. Not to sound arrogant but I think most women on here would have to train slightly longer in order to get the same amount of muscle I have. Like you said as well when I am wearing everyday clothes I just look like your average person. Its only when I am wearing gym clothes, sleeveless tops or tight clothes that one can see that I have definition.(Original post by McHumpy92)

I've always wanted to start lifting weights, but I'm afraid I'll just look stupid and out of my depth haha, that and the cost of a gym membership.
I also worried about looking stupid as well when I first started but all I did was check out some of the videos on youtube and bodybuilding.com about technique which really helped -
