I applied to some self catered flats but I am reconsidering my options as the cost is too high and I'm wondering whether it would be better to just get a flat with friends.

Have you been looking at accommodation elsewhere becuae I am seriously considering doing that.

I'm starting English Lit in September and I'm living in a flat in Newington that my parents own from when my sister was at uni. I'm living with a friend that's going to Napier so sorta hoping I'll still get involved in the edinburgh uni social life despite not living in halls!

That's also referred to as halls though.

The OP is looking for people who will not be staying in university owned/managed accommodation (either self catered or catered) because they will be living with their family or in a private flat elsewhere for other personal reasons. If you're from Norway then I'd guess that you would be looking to live in university owned/managed accommodation in your first year.

I lived in Edinburgh before so leaning towards the idea of not living in halls. I'll get enough socialising done by joining sports clubs.

i guess im lucky to be staying at my grans near Dalkeith so the cost of rent is not an issue. I dont really know much about the cost of renting a flat

I'm gonna be studying History and Sociology at Edinburgh this year

I stay just outside Edinburgh, so I'll be living at home, mainly to save money. I'm just hoping that I'm not too left out from everyone in halls!

Get chatting on the first day. Introduce yourself to whoever you're sitting beside from day 1. It'll just snowball from there. You'll be fine.

Simple, just have massive flat parties all the time. I'm inviting myself if you don't mind.

In self catered flats we'll have to ask permission from the warden apparently to host "parties"

Hello there! I'm a 23 year-old postgraduate student from the US who will be starting a Master's program in the fall. I'm not living in university accommodation - it might've been kind of risky, but I posted an ad on Gumtree and found a room for quite cheap (have a friend from Glasgow checking it out on Saturday). I guess that just means I'll have to make an extra effort to meet people.
