Friend's 30th Difficulties
I've already pissed off one friend over his 30th, so am treading very carefully with this one!
A lot of my friends (and I) are turning 30 within the next few months and we're all planning ways to celebrate. A very good friend of mine is turning 30 the day before I start uni and I'm in a but of a quandry as to what to do.
I'll try explain the situation simply:
- My friends and I live in Manchester at the moment
- I start uni in Newcastle on Monday 3rd September
- I'm leaving Manchester 20th August and moving back to the parents' near Oxford
- My friend wants to go to a cottage in the Peak District with all his close friends (including me) the Friday 31st August - Monday 3rd September.
He's booking the cottage for 3 nights so people can either leave Sunday afternoon or early Monday morning. He's wanting people to stay for at least the Friday and Saturday nights.
I've so far said I can only commit to staying the Friday night as I want to travel to Newcastle on the Saturday day and have all Sunday there to get myself prepared for uni. But... staying just the one night will mean occupying a room that he could offer to someone else who could attend the whole weekend.
I've also suggested staying in a tent in the garden of whichever cottage he books so I can up and leave on the Saturday. Not a great suggestion, but an option. He's not keen on that idea and instead said we could sort something out like me sleeping on the sofa.
So... what do you think I should do?
Stay the Saturday night and forego the Sunday in Newcastle? Go with the sofa option? Stick to my guns about the tent?Last edited by adsyrah; 02-05-2012 at 15:38. -
Re: Friend's 30th Difficulties
I'd go with the sofa as might be more comfortable than a tent.
As for going to Newcastle on the Saturday, I'd say why not. The Sunday will give you a bit of time to settle in and get use to the new surroundings.
Although in your first week you won't normally do a lot depending on your degree. Mostly just signing papers for the admin of the uni. One or two introductory lectures, that's it really. -
Re: Friend's 30th DifficultiesI've got a double airbed I could take, so may suggest that.(Original post by SirMasterKey)

That was my thinking. Wasn't sure if I was being overly selfish!(Original post by SirMasterKey)

It's graduate entry medicine, so pretty sure they throw us in the deep end straight away.(Original post by SirMasterKey)

Re: Friend's 30th DifficultiesSo one of the two degrees I know of that do that. Yeah I'd definitely get up to Newcastle on the Saturday night. You don't want to be late by getting yourself lost on the Monday.(Original post by adsyrah)

Re: Friend's 30th DifficultiesI could, but don't want to.(Original post by TheSownRose)
Why not leave early Sunday morning?
Moving to another city and starting a uni course within a week is stressful enough, so want a day to chill out on my own and get my bearings.
