I definitely go for Nottingham. It has a great reputation for Law and I think their name would serve you better when applying to jobs in Law.

...unless the OP is interested in maritime law, in which case Southampton is generally known as the world leader.

One is inclined to urge you to opt for Nottingham - that is taking account of the assumption I have made which is that you want to pursue a career in the Law? Southampton by no means is a poor university, however in terms of an LLB degree - Nottingham is far more prestigious and thus will likely to give you better graduate prospects, as the university will have better ties with Law firms, and perhaps even Chambers. Also, there is not a certainty that you will get an A*, so choosing Southampton purely for this extra 1k, would be a unwise decision in my opinion.

On the flip side of things, have you visited both universities? and if so, which one did you prefer? If you did prefer Southampton and you feel you would fit in there, more so than Nottingham, picking Southampton would by no means be a disastrous decision. At the end of the day, you are more likely to perform better in your degree if you are in an environment that you enjoy and are comfortable with. There's no reason to say, you can't make it 'big', if you do your degree at Southampton - degree classification and your CV will likely to be the big deciding factors when you come to applying to jobs.

    It's up to you.

Like Knowsthelaw has said, Nottingham is far more prestigious.
