    Getting braces..
So I'm getting braces soon.. (yay -.-) lol but I think I'd still have them through Y12 and possibly Y13.. I'm kinda worried about the amount of appointments needed and how this will affect my punctuality/attendance.. the school I'm planning to go to is hella strict with the stuff and I'm kinda worried they'll kick me out or something -_-' also how many people in your college wear braces? Since I'm kinda worried I'd be the only one wearing braces whereas everyone has already had theirs when they were in Y8/9

The orthodontist said the treatment would be for estimated 18-24 months.. is this the length of time the braces are actually on? or is it including retainers? Since I don't think my teeth are THAT bad.. just a few crooked on the bottom and top.

(gotta get 4 teeth removed :cry2:)

Yeah i had them for 2 years too.

Yeh you will have appointments, every few months though.

that time frame doesnt include restainers btw. i had braces on for like 18 months. then had retainers after that. (but i didnt wear them and threw them away after 1 day)

I'm at a sixth form college and quite a few people in my year (year 13) have braces, including me. It's nothing to be embarrassed about. My school are quite strict with attendance, but when you're going to the orthodontist or something they're not too strict.

I had braces throughout 6th form and also had 2 teeth taken out due to overcrowding. It wasn't that bad apart from it hurts to eat for a couple of hours after you have them tightened. You will probably have them for around 18 months and then retainers for another 6 months (I only had ot wear retainers at night so it was ok)

And plus a few people at uni still have braces so you aren't the oldest. Just get them and have great teeth for the rest of your life

Aw, seriously don't worry. I've had braces since the start of Year 13 and will probably have them in uni() too, but they're really not bad. You won't miss too much school for appointments, but if you're not careful and break them, you might need to go more often. Depends how far your orthodontist is too. I have to travel 2 hours to mine, and the appointments only last 10 minutes. I schedule mine on days with few lessons, and even though my attendance dipped significantly, they don't care because you have a perfectly valid reason.

There are 60-ish people in my Year and I can think of 6 people with braces and countless others that had them at some point.

A year and a half was the time scale they told me. It doesn't include retainers, but it will FLY by. I've had mine for 7 months and it feels like nothing. My teeth weren't originally very bad either, but they're already straighter than most peoples at this point, so hopefully they'll turn out well.
I had 4 teeth removed too.

But anyway, it's FINE. You'll have them off before you finish school(lucky!) and you'll hardly notice after the first few months.

    Re: Getting braces..
What are the chances of them being taken off early? As I only want them for a year! Stupid NHS scheme -_- went to a orthodontist when I was like 13 and said I wasn't qualified for the free braces.. now I go to a different one and I'm eligible :'(

It's worse cos' I'm going to a different school for sixth form.. and I want to make a good impression hah, even though I've always had a lot of friends.. I'm kinda worried I'd be abit singled out? Since I'm going to a Sixth form where it was girls only from Y7-11 >.< regret so much for not having' them early

    Re: Getting braces..
Aww OP I wouldn't worry about it. I seriously don't think anyone would notice. To be fair your probably better starting with them then with out. My friend at 6th form wore them and I never even noticed she wore them because I'd always known her with them if that makes sense? I know you'll be really conscious but honestly people won't notice. And at the end of the day, you got to think of it as it's two years at the most out of your life for perfect teeth for the rest of your life. Hell I'd swap!

What ever you do wear the retainer you get afterwards coz otherwise your teeth will go back.. or worse like mine did

Also I knew three people at uni with braces, and that was just people I knew and I don't know many people at uni anyway lol

Oh and completely agree with the tightening thing!! Ouch!!
What was worse was when they put a new wire on and they don't clip the wire down properly at the end and a bit sticks out and literally rips your gum until you go back and they clip it down shorter. Or was that just my psycho dentist lol

I had mine from Y11 to start of Y13 >.< At first he was convinced I'd need surgery But I didn't think they were that bad; I had four taken out too. You'll have an appointment every six for seven weeks, it'll literally be five or ten minutes when everything is tightened up again (that hurts like a bitch sometimes). The time frame doesn't include retainers, they're on all the time for 6 months & then at night for another 6 & then whenever you remember after that...

    Re: Getting braces..
I had braces in year 12, like other people have said don't worry about missing too many lessons, the appointments aren't all that often and only last about five to ten minutes. If you're really concerned though I guess you could make sure the appointments fall during your free periods, but even so its a valid reason for missing lessons, its not like you're skipping them just for fun
The time they tell you that you need to have them for varies, and is just an estimate as far as I'm aware. I had mine taken off about four months early lol but but it doesn't include retainers, you're meant to wear them at night for ever afterwards or something to ensure that your teeth stay straight. Most people stop after a while though, and most of the time their teeth stay straight (saying that I have a friend who didn't wear hers at all, and her teeth have gone back to how they were before the braces. It seems like a bit of a waste of time and effort tbh )

If it makes you feel any better I've got them and I'm 22! And they probably won't be taken off til I'm nearing 24...
But no-one cares, I wouldn't worry about it

The appointments are around every 6-8 weeks, and they don't take long so you'll only be needing an afternoon off here and there... College aren't allowed to kick you out for that lol.

The 18-24 month thing will be for the fixed braces, you have to wear the retainer for years after they're off I'm afraid or your teeth will go back to the way they were before you had the braces.
