3D printer 750$. They're going to be in most peoples homes within 1-2 years at the very max.
P.s.
In what world is 1-2 years max 'now anyway? Just wondering -

I hate it when you see all these lefties and commies complain about capitalism while their using a Mac, wearing brand clothes, drive advanced cars, take pictures of their 'conquests' fighting the man using brand named cameras, set up brand named tents to sleep in and in turn get in the way of the normal gentle hard working banker trying to earn some money to feed his kids, eat cheap food that probably in their eyes just appears out of nowhere. They'll also of course use their iPhone and Blackberry mobiles to tweet the latest bull that goes through their worthless mind.
It's called empathy for others who aren't so lucky i.e. the majority of people on the planet. -
Re: Is THIS the Real Reason they Blocked Pirate Bay?If a dude can produce a product for a profit in his backyard for 750$ I have no doubt that a large company can do it for a lot less - economies of scale at the very least.(Original post by Tommyjw)

It's not now, and I don't think this is linked to 3D printers. I was just emphasizing that this technology is very close to becoming available to the consumer at a pretty low cost, since most people on this thread seem to think it's still 10 years away

For all those of you saying they cost too much:
http://www.reprapsource.com/en/shop/list/213
€1k will get you one big enough to make a 200mm~ cube.
This technology isn't as far away as you think.
I don't think this is why they blocked thepiratebay.se. It's because the RIAA lawyers have no idea that TPB hosts no illegal content. Much less than the RIAA site, infact. -

Blocked in the UK unless you're doing something illegal to bypass it. -
Re: Is THIS the Real Reason they Blocked Pirate Bay?Aye at the moment, although seeing as these printers seem to be able to create quite intricate designs, would the cars body not be able to be created with less separate metal parts that need to be welded together? I mean really it could be printed in one big piece of metal, with appropriate slots and holes as required for other components to be added. I suppose with multiple 3D printers, car manufacturing will become even more of a totally mechanical process with robotic arms and these printers dealing with every stage of the production line. Just humans needed with the skill to fix said machines when they inevitably need maintenance.(Original post by Arbolus)
Well, no. You'd be able to print the metal parts to build a car, but then you'd have to take them down to a garage and get someone to put it all together.
Then you'd also need separate 3D printers to do the electronics, the glass, the upholstery, and everything else that isn't metal. Considering each one at the moment would cost several thousand pounds, and that's before the cost of the "ink", it would probably be cheaper to simply go and buy a car. -

It's definitely more than 1-2 years away before it's in homes. Maybe not 10 years. But we have a 3d printer in uni and it costs £150 to print something the about 10cm cubed. It's really expensive and takes hours. That is why hardly anyone uses it in our uni. Plus the plastic is all the same so the results are quite limited. I'm not sure what people would use it for in their homes?
