Re: Why am I not losing weight?
I know exactly how you feel! I do between half and hour to two hours excercise everyday, watch what I eat, abstain from alcohol yet I actually pile the pounds on.
Hence why my blood boils when people decide to start 'how do i put weight on?' threads. ' I eat all day and do no excercise but I'm still skinny.'SHUT UP! -
Re: Why am I not losing weight?
It's just as horrible to be too thin as it is to be overweight.
For many years I was watched by teachers to ensure I ate properly, they called my parents in and I was sent to counsellors, all because I couldn't put on weight. It's not nice having everyone thinking you're in denial. -
Re: Why am I not losing weight? There is more to life then being average. Don't shun OP because she has ambition.(Original post by PinkMobilePhone)
You're perfectly healthy as you are, you admit that yourself, yet you're saying you feel "fat fat fat".
That's worrying. I don't care how much you want to dress it up, you have issues. -
Re: Why am I not losing weight?
145' at 5'8...
I've just done some quick BMR calculating and your BMR is 1500. Now this the amount of calories your body needs for vital functioning at a complete rest state in one day. Now add in the calories needed for food digestion and movement and that'll bump it up by another couple of hundred.
Increase your calories a bit: have 1600 - 1800 calories (the very least you should have is 1500) depending on how much exercise you do.
Btw your weight sounds fine but I can understand wanting to lose a bit for confidence and to get fitter, just don't go overboard k?Last edited by Pen Island; 03-05-2012 at 15:24. -
Re: Why am I not losing weight?
Walking doesn't do a lot unless you're doing a solid 1/2 hours at a time and at brisk pace. It would be better to build a bit of muscle because it will burn more calories. Also if you're just losing weight and not toning then you'll end up skinny fat which is still rather unideal.
If you want to lose belly fat, cut the diet coke - that stuff is terrible for flab around the waist - and eat nuts/seeds/oats.
And for god's sake girl just eat some breakfast! If you honestly have no appetite for food in the mornings you can always make a fruit smoothie or something and throw in a bit of protein powder. -
Re: Why am I not losing weight?
You should avoid bread. When I was dieting, even if i stuck within my allotted calories, if i ate white bread, the weight loss stalled.
Also I understand your wanting to lose weight even though your bmi is within the healthy range. Everyone has an ideal weight, and even 5lbs over you can feel your clothes don't fit right or there's that little bulge that could go. I'm half a stone over what I consider to be my ideal, and when i can be arsed, it's going. -
Re: Why am I not losing weight?
Perhaps its the time of day you're eating?
Like if you eat less than three hours before bed its very bad
Also small meals throughout the day instead of large meals are good x

Keep anon please.
Help me someone please, I cant see what I'm doing wrong.
So I weighed myself on the 23rd April and I was 65.9kg (that's like 145 pounds)
Ive been counting every calorie, and eating about 1300-1500 calories a day. There have been a couple of days I ate about 2100, but considering my activity, that shouldnt be a catastrophe.
I exercise about 3 times a week for about an hour, and walk to and from lectures and town - I walk everywhere. That's at least an hour walking everyday, often more.
Normally when I do this, the weight drops off, at about a kg (2lb) a week, but this morning I was 65.7 kg (still 145 lb)

soooooo frustrating! I don't even feel thinner or anything.
Ive had a special k bar today, walked for about an hour because I had a lecture, and I literally dont want to eat anything. I don't want to starve myself, but I want to lose weight!! Feel fat fat fat. -
Re: Why am I not losing weight? As other posters have suggested, breakfast is hugely important. It gives you energy throughout the day, for one, and after 6-8 hours of no food your body is starving (there's a reason it's called 'break' 'fast').(Original post by Anonymous)

You aren't eating properly... following that breakfast I'd recommend eating 5-6 meals (small meals) a day, as your body is like a furnace: small amounts of constant fuel keeps it burning [calories and fat] more steadily, than if you suddenly threw in a load of coal [food]... If you ate more regularly, but smaller portions, you should start to see a difference.
Also, try keep carbs relatively low, and avoid them at all costs at night time (unless you know you'll be out til 3-4am where you'll have time to burn them). Brown rice/pasta is great if you must have them, and don't have chocolates/energy drinks/sweets at all (or, if you can't go cold turkey, give yourself 1 cheat meal a week).
Keep protein lean - IE chicken, fish, etc. Red meat & the likes are more fatty.
Obviously your exercise levels aren't high enough if you're not losing weight.. Weight loss comes with a calorie deficit so crank up that exercise as ANY LESS than 1500 you will go into starvation mode making it harder to lose weight
Exercise 3x a week isn't enough for weight loss either. Great for maintaining, but not when you're trying to shed the pounds.
What do you do in the gym? Or is just cardio?
It's essential to have a bit of weight training in there too, not just cardio (dw if you're a girl, do a bit of resistance training/low weights-high reps, won't bulk you up).. EDIT: join a gym if you only walk to lectures. Some do great student deals.
Also for speedier fat loss: do cardio for 1/2 an hour BEFORE eating anything. It turns to fat stores, rather than sugar stores which you 'feed' after eating carbs, to keep your body going during exercise. Works for me, so try it out.
Hope this helps

Re: Why am I not losing weight? No no no! WORRRSSTT thing you can eat to 'keep within the calorie' limits. Grab a piece of fruit, or a handful of raw nuts instead. Those things have good sugars & healthy fats, not that processed *** found in chocolates/pastries....(Original post by Anonymous)
a) Posted my diet earlier in the thread: I think its quite healthy and varied but Ive been counting calories exactly and keep to 1300-1500 cals a day - cooked evening meal and loads of fruit and veg. Sometimes have chocolate/pastries/cake/sweets but only a bit to keep within the calorie limits. -
Re: Why am I not losing weight?Paha. I'm so sick of seeing people post about eating disorders when they clearly have no ****ing clue.(Original post by Octohedral)
Your BMI is 22 - it's perfect. With all that exercise it's probably all muscle too. Are you male or female?
I'm sorry, but you sound like you might be developing an eating disorder - weighing yourself after a week, strictly counting calories to the extent that you are unsure about grapes and constantly feeling you are fat are not healthy traits. Please don't let this get too far. Make yourself a healthy meal plan, allow yourself the occasional treat, and keep exercising and I guarantee you won't get fat. Don't be afraid to see your GP if it gets too much.
I'm willing to bet you don't believe me, but I'm genuinely only trying to help you stay healthy.
Weighing yourself after a week? How about fifteen times a day.
Unsure about grapes? Try unsure about using moisturiser, in case the oil seeps through your skin and causes you to absorb calories.
The reason OP thinks she has not lost any weight could be due to several reasons.
1. Water retention, especially if salty foods have been consumed.
2. Weighing at different times of the day. (Does not take extra food/drink consumed)
3. Hormonal changes, stress. Cortisol in particular could lead to weight gain.
I'm not a doctor, there could/are other reasons.
Try waiting a few more weeks to see a difference, if nothing happens by then, maybe try cutting out the chocolate that you snack on and saving it for an occasional treat. -

Sorry, but this is total bull. -
Re: Why am I not losing weight? This is actually quite offensive and ignorant, there's nothing wrong with wanting to look better/more toned and still be a healthy weight. Everyone has fat days! I am the same height as the OP, used to weigh the same and even after losing a stone I have them constantly! 'Fat' is different for everyone - everyone has different standards about their appearance, some higher than others, it sure as hell doesn't mean you have 'issues' if you don't want to settle for average just because official guidelines call it healthy. I actually think all this BMI nonsense causes people to get lazy because I certainly looked fat at the higher end of the 'healthy' range.(Original post by PinkMobilePhone)

right, ok.
But I'm asking about my diet/exercise here, not seeking the go-ahead to lose weight from people who can't see me. I'm not going to think 'oh right, tsr tells me I'm a good weight, I'll ignore what I see in the mirror and forget about lowering my weight to a level where I feel so much more comfortable in my skin and have more confidence'.
If you actually wanted to help, please do. If not, telling me I have mental problems isn't going to change my mind about anything. -
Re: Why am I not losing weight?try the smarter science of slim, eat as much as u want as long as its good healthy unprocessed food, and exercise with a lot of intensity but not very often. Diets dont work in the long term, with a calorie deficit ur body will burn muscle not fat. If u feed it what it needs u will lower ur fat percentage. I think it really works. Plus u will look after ur general health too.(Original post by Anonymous)

I don't gym, I go for a run outside (alternate between walking/jogging). Really prefer outdoor exercise to gyms
I always do this first thing in the morning, before eating anything. Then I eat something carby.
K, so I will:
-have breakfast
-cut the diet coke
-eat at least 1500 every day
-move as much as I can, but until exams end, I really can't do any exciting activities. It'll have to be powerwalking and jogging every 3 days or so. Is that ok? (for now). -

Google is your friend.
Yes it is.
But clearly you don't know how to use it.(Original post by EonBlueApocalypse)
Eat 6 small healthy meals a day, keeps your metabolism high and burning more calories.
Again, total bullpoop.(Original post by Elf.)

"Food intake has a negligible effect on metabolism. Some foods, including those with caffeine, may slightly and temporarily increase metabolism, but the effect is too small to help you lose weight. What most affects your basal metabolic rate (BMR), the rate at which your body burns calories at rest, is body composition and size."
“The notion [of high meal frequency] has been put into question by the recognition of a high level of dietary underreporting in overweight individuals. In addition, no difference in total daily energy expenditure has been documented as a function of daily meal number. Weight loss is not facilitated by high meal frequency. Snacking in obese subjects is associated with higher energy and fat intake.” - France Bellisle, Scandinavian Journal of Nutrition, 2004 edition.

Re: Why am I not losing weight? No there are not. It's all about calories in and calories out, as you dont like brekkie look here http://www.leangains.com/2010/04/leangains-guide.html . Don't by the bs about timing, its broscience or misunderstood science, Martin on this site and Alan Aragon on BB.com busted these myths many times with evidence backed research. OP, you're probably missing what you are counting, do you drink tea or coffee? If so, if you have milk and 10 cups a day, it works out near enough to an extra 200kcals. Or maybe you aren't weighing you foods correctly, but either way you're eating too much. Also look up IIFYM, if it fits your macros. Where you can eat w/e you want so long as you attain your kcals/protein/carbs/fat macros.(Original post by Anonymous)
Surely this and the other post you made aren't right? I know there are nutritional and portion and timing issues in diets, but fundamentally, it comes down to the basic biology - the calories eaten vs the ones burnt off
I dont eat a lot of breakfast because a) i never have time to sit down and properly enjoy the meal, b) Im never hungry, so why force myself to eat, when I know Ill be hungry in the evening but have to deny myself and c) I much prefer dinner/lunch kinds of foods to breakfasty food, so would rather have more of what I like.
Appreciate your posts, but I could never have rice cakes for dinner!
Also small meals throughout the day instead of large meals are good x
