Amherst has the better reputation in Computer Science by far, though I don't know about how the two compare in "overall" ranking. They're also better about teaching undergrads - not nearly so many teaching assistants and overworked graduate students trying to head your classes.

    Good luck with your decision.

BU has the better overall reputation. I live in the States (but not in Massachusetts) and BU definitely has more prestige associated with it than UMass does. It might be because BU is private and UMass is a state school, but of course this doesn't necessarily have much to do with the actual quality of education.

It's important to consider the setting---BU is right in the middle of a great city, while UMass is in a more rural/towny sort of area. Amherst is a great town and there are a ton of college students (due to the 5 College Consortium), but it's still a much quieter setting than Boston.
