I'm moving to Germany for a year this August and need a new laptop and will also be taking my Xbox. This does not bode well for me.

Just use XP. I dunno how they're going to sell laptops in Germany without Windows 7, though.

I doubt it is going to stand for long, and should hopefully be the catalyst to stop the ridiculous patent wars being waged by the tech companies.

They're not actually banned though at the moment. The ruling is unenforceable on account of a separate US restraining order against Motorola which forbids them from acting on the recently awarded German injunction http://www.techdirt.com/articles/201...icrosoft.shtml

These patent wars are just getting silly now. The customer is potentially being left in the lurch meanwhile lawyers are have field day with the fees they'll be raking in.

I think you're misunderstanding the nature of this ban. It's a ban on the sale of Windows and Xbox 360s, not a ban on owning them or taking them into the country. Plus it's not being enforced yet, and I doubt it ever will be. Banning the sale of Windows would have serious consequences for many German businesses.

This is becoming more and more common, companies using patents and lawsuits to screw each other. Its bad for business and technology development

I'll be ok then. I knew I could take my Xbox but I thought they banned the selling of games, but like people had said, It shouldn't be too long before this is all sorted out.
