Law. Which A Levels should I take?
Hello!
I'm currently in the process of choosing my A Levels and here's my dilemma.
I want to be a Barrister. I want to get into law school etc.
The A Level subjects I have chosen are as follows:
Law
Sociology
Philisophy and Ethics
English Literature
I want to do German as well. So, should I drop Law or Philosophy for German? or should I take german as a fifth A level?
Things to consider:
Taking 5 A Levels may be too much
Law schools may not like Law A Levels
A foreign language is considered very good
Philosophy and ethics is apparently very difficult.
So I need your advice, if you have any questions please feel free to ask
Danke Sehr -
Re: Law. Which A Levels should I take?Law, Sociology and P&E are considered "soft", Eng Lit is the only "respected " AS level.(Original post by Dust.)

I'd replace sociology and law with something like history, geography, a science, maths?
5 A-levels is way too much, stick to 4 as it maximises the chance of getting the best grades possible.
Consistency is key.
All "respected" AS levels are considered equally, no AS level confers advantage over another.
Basically, pick 4 AS levels which are respected, you will like, and you will get a good grade. -
Re: Law. Which A Levels should I take?
Typical TSR response:
Drop sociology for German, better chance of getting into a RG Uni, which is your only hope at becoming a barrister.
Realistically:
Doesn't matter, do whatever you want to do. Laws good prep for Cambridge interview + essay (If I had known 1/10th of the stuff I know now back then, I'm sure I would've got in
). Anyway, whatever you do, definitely do German - looks good for city firms (in case you change your mind to be a solicitor) and it'll be good if you want to go into EU law.

Re: Law. Which A Levels should I take?
Drop law for a language or history, most people on TSR have a low view of psychology and sociology when in fact they're quite respected albeit not as much as traditional subjects. Might be worth considering doing psychology rather than sociology though, it's a bit more respected and there's quite a bit of forensic psychology.

Regarding Law A Level, fine everywhere other than LSE and Manchester: http://store.aqa.org.uk/qual/gce/pdf...-W-UNI-LAW.PDF
Much as we may all like to think our opinions are useful and important, ultimately we have precisely zero say over whether you get accepted to law and are unlikely to have any major insight into the process. The people who wrote these have both these things.
Hopefully these should help.Last edited by roh; 13-05-2012 at 13:22. -
Re: Law. Which A Levels should I take? You would be best off dropping either sociology or law and replacing it with German. Contrary to one of the posters above, philosophy is viewed as a generally acceptable A-level and more favourably than law or sociology.(Original post by Dust.)

Re: Law. Which A Levels should I take? No. My school does not offer Politics. Even if it did I would not take it. History, to me, is the biggest bore ever.(Original post by Hulk Hogan)
English Literature, History, Politics. /thread
Thanks to everyone else for the comments, i'll keep them in mind. -
Re: Law. Which A Levels should I take?Must have been the incorrect choice for me too, then(Original post by Hulk Hogan)
If you would not take Politics given the option, and History bores you, I fear Law may be the incorrect choice for you.
OP, I'd suggest Eng Lit, Philosophy & Ethics, German and Law (or Sociology). -
Re: Law. Which A Levels should I take?Law is a good base for law (however maybe not so respected and apparently DEAD boring at A level) but History as well as English lit might look better if you are aiming for the top unis. If you like German and think you can do well go for it! I would deffo recommend History.(Original post by Dust.)
