What the big deal with Zumba?
OK... the gym was rammed to hell (after work time)... my membership gets me into all classes as well as the gym, so I thought i'd swallow my pride and try Zumba, as it was on in 10 mins. Just wanted to see what the hype was all about. I've always been told 'don't knock it till you've tried it anway' so I just went in there...

...and it sucks! I absolutely hated it. Why is it so popular?

Lesson learned: stay in the gym

It's another thing aimed at middle-aged women to convince them there is a really easy way to get fit. My mum is one of them. It's useless...

It can be quite fun, depending on the class. And I find with some tracks if you work hard then it does do something. But yeah, generally isn't very taxing. Perhaps if you did it everyday, with weights, in a massive room so you could move about a LOT it might be worth it :P I personally don't go with the aim of having a massive workout.

I went to my first zumba class today and I liked it - it's a fun way to work out, although it's not intense enough for me, but for some it may be. It makes a nice change than being stuck on the treadmill/ outdoor running all the time, which is what I normally do!

Women will go to ridiculous lengths to avoid real exercise, even if it means looking silly and spending far more time, effort and money than is necessary.

You're a man, of course you're not going to like it, it's more an exercise for female bonding than female fitness. I don't think anyone really believes it's a good way to get fit, a bit like how everyone bought the Wii Fit. Middle-aged women have been using "fitness" classes to get out of the house since time immemorial.

Its fun and it burns calories . Doing such classes and eating right will get your body into shape.

Because most people find it a struggle to get the motivation to get fit and lose weight. Although it might not be the best workout there is, it can still get your heart beating faster and burn calories. I actually think it's important to find more exercise classes like this given the current obesity crisis. Anything that people are willing to do, and actually ENJOY, for whatever reason, is great imo.

EDIT: Also there's no point in saying "they'd be better doing x,y,x etc" because the point is that if they're not already doing it as well as Zumba, they WOULDN'T do it at all. So Zumba is better than nothing!

I lost 2 stone doing nothing more than using the Wii Fit. Again like Zumba, it's fun and it makes people move! The only issue with a lot of people is that they subconsciously eat more to make up for any exercise they've done.. but because I tracked food to make sure I didn't do this, it worked well for me! Although I have moved on since then and now do better exercise.

what about having fun? I personally would rather do 5 hours of Zumba than having to do one hour of weight lifting which I find mind-numbingly boring. And why does it mean they look silly exactly? Since when is dancing silly?

I actually think Zumba on the Wii is way more exercise than any of the classes I have done, they are way more energetic!

I also agree with the other point you made: if some people didn't do Zumba they wouldn't be doing anything! Classes push you because you can't just decide you can't be bothered anymore (like you would on a treadmill - people who just come in and walk on speed 6 or something for 10 mins really annoy me), and the music is pretty awesome

Women like social activities and they like novelty.
Is it not full of milfs then?

Meh, my girlfriend bought it for xbox kinect (instead of star wars /spit), but she does it every night and ends up covered in sweat, so whatever works for her.

I'd like it if she did some squats though... :P

does it get your heart beat racing? Does it make you sweat?

Yes then its burning more calories than sitting on the couch - ergo its working.

You want to go back to running in place then do so. but dance classes can be a lot of fun.

Its more of a feminine thing anyway. The idea of a man swinging his hips and grinding all over the place is both funny and ridiculous!!
