I beleive in mental illness, however i believe all mental illnesses are the same, ie the mental illness is in fact just the fact that you think you have a mental illness, e.g. people with 'depression' aren't actually any different to people who don't have depression, they just think they are.

This is an incredibly interesting debate, but one to which I'm largley ignorant of unfortunately - all I can say is (what might be obvious) it is evident that mental conditions are highly problematic categories and that their meanings and demarcations aren't inherent to the physical conditions but rather reflect social understandings/discourses, of which obviously flow from a particular social/historical/cultural/political context. Put simply perhaps; to call mental conditions not conforming to the 'norm' as illnesses seems, intuitively speaking, more than questionable, and simply reflective of the prevailing order/interests.

Mental illnesses do exist, people who argue that it doesn't, aren't looking at reality.
People are suffering from mental illnesses, therefore it's not something that we "believe" in, it's happening, right now.

You need to look up the word "belief". It simply means to have confidence in the existence of something, without absolute proof. And there isn't absolute proof of mental illness. Not unless you've experienced one.
