Re: IB Germanists!
I'm only in SL and I'm a bit of a special case (dad's German but aside from hearing him speak German on the phone, I grew up speaking English). My revision has mainly been making my Dad speak German to me (harder than I'd imagined), writing the odd practice essay, reading papers and listening to German music.
German music's a lot of fun, and I find it far easier to remember vocab if it's to music. We listened to stuff like Wir Sind Helden and Die Artzte in class, so onward from there on YouTube!
As for learning vocab formally though, trying to connect the word in German to it's translation somehow seems to help. And also as German vocabulary's often made of a couple of smaller words, with the translation rarely far away from the English of the smaller words it's made of, you can kinda work it out a lot of the time (hope that makes sense).
Unfortunately I've got 2 chemistry exams on the afternoon of the German exams, so I'm not sure how much time I'll have for German. :/ ahhhhh!!!

Re: IB Germanists!
I am doing German B HL. I am predicted 7, and I need 7, but I think I will not get it.
Honestly, there is nothing you can do to prepare for paper 1 now. You cannot learn 10...00 words in 3 days. To my mind, you either know the words or you don't.
However, taking into account that in paper 2 you get only 10 marks for the quality of your language/sophistication of vocab/grammar, I would say that the only way to prepare for this exam is to revise different text styles (e.g. formal letter, email etc.) and learn some idioms or quotations for paper 2 in order to ensure that you get as many points for criteria such as "cultural interaction".
And let's just hope that paper 1 will be normal and will not contain any Austrian dialect/slang/special terms etc.
Anyway, good luck. -
Re: IB Germanists! I have Chem as well on that day - isn't it awful! German music IS the way forward! Love it(Original post by Tetris-Blocks-For-Brains)

Saaame, I'm predicted a 7 and need a 7! I normally do a lot better in Paper 2 and the writing part of Paper 1 (i.e. where I can control it more), so I'm hoping for a 6 in Paper 1 and a good 7 in Paper 2 - as my orals are 7s, that might bring me up to a 7 overall? I totally agree about learning text types - it's stupid to waste marks there!(Original post by Существо)

Re: IB Germanists! It is aweful! Why do they do this to us? It's not as if there's so little space in the timetable that it couldn't be avoided. I'm trying to think of how to make this as painless as possible. I'm thinking going to bed at 8 oclock the night before, eating flapjacks and fruit, and taking a 2 litre bottle of water with me. What's your plan of survival?(Original post by beautiful-lion)

And it's not as if I'm confident about Chem - I want a 7, but I still have SO much to do!
Survival: wearing TRACKIES all day (not caring what I look like), hopefully knowing enough german/chem that I don't have to get up at 5am for last minute cramming, water in the exam, snacks/caffeine for inbetween german and chem and not panicking. hah. as if.
And I also do HL history! Stressssssss! -
Re: IB Germanists! I'm meant to get a 7 in chemistry too. I've been revising for that more than anything else and I still feel like there's an insane amount of content to wedge into my brain. It should be ok, but I'm really nervous about it. I've done a few practice papers, and I was wondering about timings in paper 2. Do you know how many marks sections A and B carry? I just don't want to end up spending too much time on one section or the other.(Original post by beautiful-lion)

Same for german really, though I guess it might be different for HL. I don't know how long I can spend on each part of paper 1.
Oh gawd that does sound like a nightmare! I hope it isn't too painful. I'm kinda lucky in a way, as once the day of evil is over, I've got 2 more exams and I'll be done! -
Re: IB Germanists! Not entirely sure about timing, but my chem teacher told me:(Original post by Tetris-Blocks-For-Brains)

Paper 1: each mark is worth 0.5% of your overall grade
Paper 2: each mark is worth 0.3%
Paper 3: each mark is worth 0.4%
...that might have just been to persuade us that we really can't revise for paper 3 the night before.
Aaaaahhhhh German. ok. Let's start a list of useful verbs/phrases:
errichten/gründen - to establish
darstellen - to represent
behaupten(, dass..) - to maintain (as in: I maintain that it is still a huge problem...)
Ich bin fest davon überzeugt, dass... - I am firmly convinced that... -
Re: IB Germanists! haha. Oh lordy paper 3. Not looking forward to that. We're doing human biochemistry and medicines and drugs, and I'm the only one in my HL class who doesn't also do HL biology... Not going to be good. Onward with the memorising!(Original post by beautiful-lion)
Not entirely sure about timing, but my chem teacher told me:

Yes. German! I've just asked my Dad for some idiomatic expressions. I'm much better at writing informally than formally, so they're likely to be distinctly conversational. Anyway, a favourite of mine:
Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof. - I don't have a clue.
Hoffentlich werden wir mehr als Bahnhof am Dienstag verstehen! -

Re: IB Germanists!
Does anyone know how strict the examiners are in marking paper 2? E.g. would i lose lots of marks for mistakes such as "Liebe geht blind" (I dont even know how i could write that), and Krankenheit instead of Krankheit??? Idk, i dont usually make these mistakes so I get 7s for essay....... but something just went wrong during the exam.
-
Re: IB Germanists! Same! My Paper 2 was full of mistakes, as I was writing about the Olympics which I have no vocab for. Plus, I wrote sooo much that it must have been littered with errors(Original post by vanesavu)

Re: IB Germanists! Yeah, what was your predicted grade? I was predicted a 7, I thought my german was pretty good, but I panicked during the exam or something, I dont know........ =// Im so stressed.(Original post by beautiful-lion)

Re: IB Germanists!
Oh, and is it a problem when they say "nennen sie EINEN Grund" but like you write more?
Text A: with the Book about Holocaust, did you put "Biografie" or "Buch uber den Krieg"? I put biografie, but had to erase it so many times... uhhh it could have been both.
I had problems with Text B: which words did you fill in? I filled : Schuller, Uberrascht, Verliess, Ritual. Then the descriptions of people... The answer for the first guy was smth like he had a Freundin, and the answer for girl was that she liked Discos or smth.
Then the answer for "dadurch" was "man fragt sich oft etc.". And one of the answers for this text was Neugier.
Then there was the question on Text C on the tone... like what the hell? It could have been either Sarkastisch or Resigniert, I chose sarkastisch because of the description of the Vicious circle etc. -

Re: IB Germanists!
Difficult!!!
Noone in my class knew what a 'Vortrag' was (text D) and we all seem to have written in different text type styles....none of which were right :P Still managed to write >100 words though, and included quite a few points, so how much would I be penalised?? It was about Tim Henman's motivation wasn't it? :P
The rest of paper 1 seemed ok, at least no difficult texts I can remember....but I did have to guess quite a bit
Paper 2 was alright
Did the diary of work experience in a hospital
